I Would say the gauge itself has a few issues, and you probably need a new sender. I put a new sender in mine this spring. Haven;t got through a tank of gas yet, but can let you know how it performs when it starts getting low this weekend.

The gauges in my 2004 226 still work well with the exception of the fuel gauge which is intermittent. Issues include:
    - Reads half a tank low when it works - sender?
    - The back light is out when I turn lights on for night running
    - The gauge doesn't work for a while and then all of a sudden comes to life
    - Rest of the gauges work well

Does this indicate a gateway issue or is this typically an individual gauge issue (realizing you can't get an original fuel gauge anymore)?

    Thanks

FWIW, this is related and part of another post I created. There may be some valuable information for those of us that do not have pitot style pick ups.

"Intermittent gauge related issues. located and removed the Faria gateway box from under the dash. Removed opened inspected. Non-pitot speedometer gauge pick up, it is a paddle wheel style, no moisture present in the Faria Gateway Box. Removed cleaned with electronic cleaner, thoroughly dried out, re-assembled with new gasket. Evident gauge improvements but not perfect. WORKING GAUGES: Tach with 90% digital display improvement in digital display, Intermittent oil pressure no light, tempurature ok (formerly intermittent now seems fine) light works, Gas formerly did not work now intermittent light works. Volts always ok lights work. GAUGES NOT WORKING: No speed from the speedometer ever no light UNRESOLVED. Oil pressure intermittent no light UNRESOLVED."

You can get rid of the box completely with the PP stargazer. The instruction manual for the Nautique gauge replacement is not the best. It assumes you do not have the Stargazer already. Also remember to set your speedometer and tachometer correctly (the dial setting to 2 and 3 respectively - see troubleshooting) as this was not set correctly from the Nautique :/

My guess: Your boat has the PP integrated into the Faria box and both the dash speedo and the PP use the paddlewheel. I believe you can tell this by looking under the dash for the PP black box - it's about 3" x 5" x 1.5" with a bunch of wire harnesses feeding it. No see it? Then its likely the integrated unit. I've cobbled together several parts box PPs but never deal with the integrated unit.

How does the PP paddlewheel system control the speed? I'm pretty sure it works like this - it uses both the paddlewheel and the RPM. For the paddlewheel systems, you initially map a speed to an RPM. This tells the PP what the target RPM for any given speed should be. The paddlewheel is effectively a fine control unit - it detects the slow down/speed up as the skier pulls and micro adjusts the rpms.

If that was my boat, I'd look at the PP Stargazer upgrade grade that breaks out the PP box from the Faria box. This way if the Faria box ever dies, you'll be good to go. Sadly, seems like you are in for a new display a regardless. From a usability standpoint, the GPS unit takes a lot less fussing and you get the benefits for latest firmware.

To really sort this out, call the folks at PP. They are super helpful and will steer you the right way. Hope this helps!

That makes sense. I'm not exactly sure what the drive by wire is but the harness has 3 small plugs coming off of it that I dont have any connections for. That link I sent says it will fit 2006 but if you cross reference that guage color and layout it is made for a 2007/2008 boat. Should have done more research into it. Most ppl arent replacing their perfect pass guage but mine is broken and then add in the different steps the 06/07 boats have to do also with the guage conversion, it created a confusing mess for me. Going to order the stand alone unit with gps from perfect pass and get rid of the gateway box completely.

What's the PP drive by wire? When I think of a drive by wire system, I think of the Zero Off. Pretty sure Zero Offs were not possible until the 2007 and later model years...something changed in the ECU systems at that point that enabled the speed control systems to directly interface to engine thus avoiding the throttle servo system.

And if I have my history correct, the ZO tech was developed by PP but was sold off in some sort of licensing agreement. Today and in line with that agreement, PP only does servo systems and ZO is exclusively ECU direct interface systems.

Ya, that's the way I'm planning on going. Was going to add that to the post but didnt want to make it anymore confusing. The 2006 boats dont have DRIVE BY WIRE for perfect pass so I have the wrong parts. Bought it at the end of last year and finally opened it yesterday to get started on it. Hopefully nautique parts will let me return it. Very confusing when it says 2006 but our boats are really 2005 models. Going to call perfect pass tomorrow and make sure everything is compatible.

Not sure if this helps or not...but you might want to scan this Perfect Pass page on bypassing the Faria gateway box....

Ok guys. I have a 2006 sv211. My perfect pass has been cracked for a while but still works, most of the guages stopped working on and off. I got the guage conversion kit and got them all wired up. The 2006/2007 option has the perfect pass plugging in to the gateway. I was under the impression that I could get rid of the gateway box completely but that doesnt seem possible after reading it has to be used to for the perfect pass to work. I bought this kit thinking it would help me eliminate it completely but nothing matches up and doesnt seem like it is for our boat even though it says 2006. https://www.nautiqueparts.com/produc...t-pass-se-dbw/ 2. Questions. Are you guys eliminating the gateway box completely with the new guage conversion kits or do I have to keep the gateway to run the perfect pass? Do I have the wrong perfect pass? It is completely different the the current one I have. I thought it was an upgrade but I think it's just the wrong year.

This is the following routine I went through with Faria to troubleshoot:
    • 12v continuous, and 12v switched power, along with checking for continuity with ground lead to the ground tie-off under the dash to the gateway box
    • Voltage on the Faria bus to your first gauge: from A to D is 8.1v from A to B is 4.2v from A to C is 8.1v
    Next confirm your grounds:
    • I was getting .3 ohms from ground tie-off under the dash to the black wire going in to plug 2.
    • I was getting about .5 ohms from pin 4 of the Faria Bus wire that plugs in to the first gauge to the ground of the cigarette lighter.
All of these readings were good and Faria believed that even though there is voltage through the bus, the messaging is no longer working and they have no way to read and troubleshoot their proprietary Faria bus protocol any longer.

Therefore, I bought the conversion kit and did it myself. It wasn't that difficult. It took only a couple of hours. Also, I noticed that https://www.nautiqueparts.com/produc...y-box-2003-05/ comes with two wiring harnesses. If you have an '06 or newer you will NOT need the 25' wiring harness and you can call Miami Nautique and request a drop ship direct from from Nautique w/o this harness and save yourself around $150!

Do as MSUMike states and buy you a Deutsch crimper in advance. I'm not sure why they did not crimp the wires for the depth finder as it seems to be the same for all conversions. Regardless the correct crimper can be found here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did the install myself and it took up most of one day. The directions were ok but if you have a 2006 or newer make sure you print the addendum to the directions for the 2006 or newer as it did not come in the directions with the box. It is also helpful if you have the removal and crimping tool for the Deutsch DT connectors. There are a few wires you will need to splice if you want to try to use the existing Perfect Pass, if that part of your gateway box still works. With my gateway box under the dash I didn't need the extension harness so I was able to cannibalize the extension harness for extra connectors and wire. Everything seemed to come on with the ignition but I haven't put the boat in the water yet to test out the gauges. It was still snowing,

Good deal. Post a pic when u get a chance.

I guess issues with the actual gauges are always a possibility but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it. I'm trying to maintain the factory dash look as long as they keep going. Not crazy about how any of the replacement kits look that iv'e seen.

Next step is to replace a guage and see if that solves it, otherwise not sure which direction to go.

Mine is still operating at this point, but this is the path I intend to go down when and if it does quit working. It would be a much easier solution than swapping out gauges, not to mention a fraction of the cost.
