Gel Coat "Burning" from using too large of a prop

Does anyone have any example photos of this phenomenon? I currently have an ACME 1579 prop on my 08 210. I was looking for another so I could have a little more hole shot. I found someone selling a ACME 1235 prop, but have heard reports that it is not advisable to use this prop do to "gel coat burn". I also hear that some use it no problem. Can anyone expand on this? Does anyone have any pictures?

    Thanks

I may be wrong, but i recall reading somewhere here that N3 Boatworks uses these props on thier 210's. Might try giving them a call and get thier opinion.

Its not an issue on your boat. The older 210s had to have a plate added on the rudder to prevent the gel from pitting and burning when using a 14" or similar prop. I have a 14.50" prop on my 210 with no issues so far. Its an ACME 1272.

I took a look at my gel coat above my ACME 1236 on my 01 SAN the other day and I think I am getting this burning and pitting. The gel looks like it has been lightly sanded and there are two very small "pin holes" in the gel. I need to get some pictures next time I am at my boat. Where can I find this plate? Sorry for the hijack.

I used the 1235 with no problem on my 2008 210, great hole shot with with reduced rpm. and no burn ,usually ran with 2000pounds on top of factory ballast.

So I was told that I needed to maintain 3/4 inch clearance between the prop and the hull. I measured my existing setup (1579 13.5 dia) and I currently have 7/8 inch. Going to a 1235 14.5 inch dia prop just seems like I am cutting it way too close. I would only have 3/8". Have any of you that are running 1235s actually measured the gap? Just how much clearance do you have?

              Gel Coat Burning: Confirmed.

I swapped out my 1579 prop to a 1235 prop back in mid-April. This is on an 08 210. At the time of the swap, there were no issues. Saturday, I checked the prop area and noticed this, about the size of a dime, with many pin holes surrounding it. So I'm confirming this, that gel coat "burn" is a reality. I'm not sure why some people experience it and others don't. I use my boat pretty heavily, about 4 times a week. I also run in the TN river, which could have more particulates in the water than lakes. Just a guess.

All this being said, the 1235 is an excellent prop to push a 210. The benefits are very noticeable. I will continue to use this prop. I plan to repair the gelcoat ASAP while the damage is minimal and then cover it with an aluminum adhesive backed patch to protect the gel coat from further burn.

Chad52-thanks for following up on this thread...I know a lot of folks with the newer 210 hull want to run the 1235 and this might help with their decision.

Is that pic from before we rode Saturday or after? I don't remember that much damage before going out. Where did you find a piece of aluminum with adhesive backing?

It was from before. I took a picture while we were down there looking at it. I'm gonna get something on it quick though. I can really see this as being one of those cases where the damage, once started, really gets bad quick if you don't do anything about it.

I'll probably check McMaster Carr first. That being said, there is probably something in my garage that would work, if I could only find it...

true "duct" tape comes in adhesive backed aluminum in different thicknesses.

I don't think that would be strong enough to hold up. The stuff I've seen is basically tinfoil with a sticky backing. I think to really protect it for good a plate will have to be made and screwed to the hull.

My '03 has a plate around the rudder but it doesn't go far enough back to cover the area the prop hits. I would like to make a new plate to go further forward if and when I do get a 14" prop.

Comments made to me by an ACME rep were that slight differences in the mounting location of the motor and or slight differences in the hulls between boats can produce differences in the shaft angle resulting in tighter clearance for some 210s. He explained that is why some owners see prop burn and others do not.

Hey Chad did you ever find a solution? I really want to go to this prop or the new 5blade but pretty nervous about it due to the burn.

So you have had great results with the 1235 prop on new 08' & Up 210's not sure I want to risk the burn marks on my hull, but you reported for a few months everything was good. Any idea's on the gel burn or why you think it happened? I'm still waiting on more feedback from Jeff on the 5-blade Acme as well.
