I was under the assumption that the lanyard interrupted the ignition circuit only but if this is incorrect then I'll consider myself corrected on this one. If the pumps are firing, then one can assume that the ECM is telling the fuel pump relays to fire so it must be powered up, right?

On my 06, the gauges are de-energized when the lanyard is pulled. The whole dash goes black but the dashpod. I would be very surprised that the ECM, fuel pump, etc are all powered with the lanyard pulled and the gauges dead.

Tim, Airtool was right, no load other than compression, lower rpm equal less wear and tear. Also and easy way to check if the injectors are firing with lanyard pull is pull one plug, and if it spits fuel on each stroke then you have your answer.

Diesel oil is formulated for higher temps and loads. As a car/truck has a transmission, the RPM is not usually in the higher RPM ranges for an extended period of time. A boat engine does not have this luxury.
Also, just because two oils have the same viscosity rating, does not mean that they are in any way going to perform the same. The blend packages that go into the base oils are what differentiate oil performace.
Finally, don't forget to consider the fuel that you use. Most additives in fuel prevent intake valve buildup, but this happens at the expense of the lubrication in the combustion chamber.
I am not going to tell you what to buy, other than to say buy the best that you can.

Any Amsoil fans out there? They make a severe service 0W-30, 100% synthetic, but it's about $6 a quart.
