where can i get 2002 san eec tester/reader ( surging and random shut downs)

I do not want to throw parts at it, but I also don't want to spend a lot of money to take it to the dealer to troubleshoot it.
so I have noticed the idle has been going high and low (surging) for some time now. now the engine just shuts off. no backfire, no pop, no hesitation. it just cuts off.
it will cut off in idle and cruising. I did drain the filter bowl and no water in it.
I'm hoping to find a reader and save lots of trouble in this matter, because it could be one of a hundred things.
oh and if you have a tester and you are in the Atlanta area, that would be awesome
    thanks

What motor do you have? Ford or Chevy?

There is a eec test port on the ECM bracket but I have never looked into how to use it or if it can even be used? Haven't heard of it being used to diagnose these GT40s but I could be wrong. Would be cool if it's can be used but maybe it's just part of the stock ford electrical harness and is unused by PCM? I just don't know.... However, a surging idle is likely due to a bad idle air control valve. Take the valve out and try cleaning it if you see that it's dirty. They can get gunked up and start sticking or if it's completely dead then replace it.

Does it idle fine when you first start it up when motor is cold like first start up of the day cold? Then start surging once it warms up a bit? Because you say it cuts out during cruising that sounds like the valve could be stuck open which would cause it to idle fine or better when it's stone cold but then once things warm up and it doesn't close that causes a lean mixture and could be why your engine cuts out when cruising.

yeah it starts and runs fine cold, but within 5 min it begins to slight surge. progressing to a good 500rpm plus or minus surge. once I figure out where the IACV is. I will pull it off this week and clean it up and see if it helps. thanks and I will let you know.

Okay then its for sure your idle air valve. Because your engine is cutting out at cruise that tells me it's shot. Just replace it. Take it off and show to any auto parts store they can get you a new one. You'll also need new gaskets for it too. The valve is on the side of your throttle body see pics below. Disconnect the electrical connector and then a couple bolts and it comes off.

Skidim is a great website for certain parts but there is nothing marine specific about that IAC valve.... It's the same valve used in ford automobiles. Search an auto parts website like summit racing. I'm sure you'll find it for a fraction of the cost of marine parts stores. On summit racing website search by engine. 5.8L. Windsor small block.

I think the one we have on the GT40 is the motorcraft brand, look for a part number on the valve itself and try to get the same exact same one.... There are several brands of IAC valve and some I think have different electrical connectors....

I'm pretty sure that something like the INNOVA 3145 Ford code reader would do the job just fine for a GT40, or the "jumping the test terminals, etc. and counting the flashes" method of getting the codes
