    Shaft Seal

    Hi Everybody,

I am looking at my shaft seal and to try and tighten it and am having difficulty..

    i have a few questions:
    1. if you look at these 2 picturesdo i have to remove that little piece of wire in order to turn the nut? with a pipe wrech it seems the entire thing want to turn
2.looking at the other side do you think i still have a few turns left on this guy or is it time to replace?
    3. what do you use to turn this? pipe wrech? do you have to hold one side in order to turn the other one?

The wire is a safety wire to prevent the larger collar from working its way loose. Undo the safety wire. The smaller jam-nut needs to be loosened first (back it off the larger collar). Once the jam-nut is loose, then you can tighten the larger collar.

I have two big channel locks that I got cheap that I keep in the boat. They have teeth which has its good and bad points. If you want, go look for some giant adjustable wrenches.

I check it twice a season...and I know how much water I get in my bilge for our usual outings. I think the rule of thumb is a few drips per minute. You don't want too few or too many. Look at what you have going on before any changes and then look after you make changes. Sometimes I have my wife drive a bit before I rewire.

What Dave said..... And I've always used the 8-10 drips a minute.. some might say that's a bit too much, but works for me ..... Be sure to put the wire back on.... And if it breaks you can get Stainless wire from Ace hardware....

Ok. .I need to bring this one back. .on 2 different occasions I have tried to tighten this. ..there is NO room to manouver under there. .again today. .used smaller pipe wrenches, tried with chanel lock pliers. .I can't find a way to hold both nuts. .and trying to back up the back one when I am able to grab it I can only move the tool by 1/4"which does nothing on the nut. ..those not matter which side I try from. ..
What is the secret to do this?
        Is it even possible? ?
I am at the point of abandoning. .
Any help or encouragement will be appreciated.
        Thanks

If you have to you can order two short aluminum wrenches that you can get under there to work with. I do not know if yours is a inboard or vee drive. If it is an inboard like my 2002 Ski Nautique then just take the engine house out of the boat, pull the floor up and then adjust away. If it is a vee drive order the tools.

OK, how much is it dripping? Forget about "drops per minute." Is it dripping or pouring? If it's doing anything less than pouring, leave it alone. You're fixing something that isn't broken. I see so many people here get all bent out of shape over 10 drops per minute vs 4. But they don't bat an eye at 5 kids jumping in and out of the boat for an hour dumping 3 gallons of water into the bilge....

My old 99 Air Nautique leaked for the entire 17 years I owned it.
