Engine dies and won't restart, ignition coil?

I have a 2006 SAN 220 (330 Excalibur), just purchased it in September. The previous owner just had the shop change the cap and rotor. I was getting an "ignition fault" message for a few minutes and while running at 3600rpm the engine suddenly died, no sputtering at all.
The engine was running smoothly before when idling and while running at speed. When I try to restart the engine it turns over strong but will not start, I did get it start one night while in the lift but shut it down immediately. When I lowered it and tried again, no start. I changed the Crank Position Sensor, but no luck. The cap and rotor look brand new. I think it may be in the ignition coil? Any help would be appreciated.

Check for a good blue spark at the coil wire and the spark plug wire.

Thanks Nautiquehunter, I have a spark plug tester and plan on checking it out on Friday.

If you find good spark Look at the fuel pump relay.

Mike, the boat is on Lake Burton, I may give you a call if I can't trace down the problem. I'm hoping its the Ignition coil at this point, pretty easy to get to and change.

I tested the resistance with a multimeter and while I don't have the specs for the relays, all three tested the exact same. I think it was .079 at points 85 and 87. Conductivity was also the exact same on all three relays. The way it shut down at cruise makes me think the fuel pump could be the culprit if the ignition coil checks out okay. I really appreciate all the help guys, its great to have access to all this knowledge and experience!

When the Pump puked on my Excal it did pretty much the same thing. Can you hear both pumps cycling on when ignition is turned on?

BTW, give Mike a call, he is a great guy!!

Check for spark if its OK then spray a little carb cleaner down the throttle body that will tell you if fuel is the problem.

Thanks Mike, I should have thought of that.

Checked spark with spark plug tester last Friday, no spark so I ordered an Ignition coil. Before I changed the coil out, I turned over the engine and heard the fuel pump kick on this time. The boat started up for about 8 seconds, changed the ignition coil just to be sure and turn over but, no start. I realize now, as some of you may already be aware, that the ECM will not allow spark if the fuel pump is not working. I'm going to order the high pressure fuel pump tonight, should I replace the low pressure as well or is usually not a factor? I was very new to this boat, so until I heard the fuel pump come on for sure, I didn't think that was the problem. Thank Quinner and Mike for all the advice

I had almost 900 hours on my boat so i replaced both high and low and am keeping old ones as backup (since warranty starts immediately on new ones).

Mine's a different boat, but I had to change both fuel pumps to resolve the issue which made me lose a few too many week-ends this past summer. Changed the high pressure pump first, then the low pressure pump went. Also make sure the connections for either pump are good as after changing the low pressure one and tested by the mechanic the boat died on me after I had just put it back in... Had it wired directly to finish the summer then added a connector when he winterized it. So, I'm with scottb7, change 'em both while you're at it.

I have a 2005 210sante with a similar problem. Does anyone know what the fuel pressure should be with the switch on. Thanks for your help

I replaced the high pressure fuel pump(FCC) and no luck. The engine cycles the fuel pump on the first time I try to start the engine and runs for 7-8 seconds. Every start after the first try results in no fuel pump cycling and the engine simply turns over. I assume I need a low pressure pump? It's very strange that it will start only the first time after I have been away from the boat 2-3 days. All three relays show the same continuity and resistance. Does this sound more like an electrical short problem?
