David F: On my boat the carling switch has wires running to the back to a set of two Hella relays. from the back of the switch you have one orange, one orange with black stripe, one pink, and one black wire. Pink and black I am pretty sure head to the dash circuit panel for power and ground (haven't traced them). The two orange wires head to the Hella relays that are right in front of the engine. From the hella relays a black and red wire run to the actuator.

Had actuator tested off boat and it works. So looks like it is either switch or one of the relays or wires.

Hmmm, I bet mine has relays as well, just never really checked. I do now remember seeing a relay sort of zip tied to one of the wiring harness at the front of the engine, but never bothered tracing it down...I bet you are right. But, it seems to me that a relay either works or doesn't so if the moter is humming, the relay is sending power. Now, if relays, there should be one for each direction. A shorted switch could be energizing both relays at the same time. Try disconnecting the "up" relay and see if the actuator works in the "down" direction.

Low voltage to a relay caused by bad contacts in the switch will cause a relay to "buzz". Bad contacts in a relay will cause the voltage to the lift motor to be low and cause the lift motor "hum". Get out the DMM or VOM and get some voltage readings.

The techs at my friends motor pool hooked it up at their shop and got it working. They said the internal motor was either just stuck or frozen when reversing. In their words they chalked it up to what they call MES. Mysterious Electrical Sh*t.

All I know, is I reinstalled it and it works now. So I am happy!!!

Thanks to all that helped and offered advice.

I thought I had a failed actuator last year that turned out to just be a fuse. We referred to that repair as the $0.12 solution to the $120 solution to the $1200 problem.

the $120 solution to the $1200 problem:

            http://www.firgelliauto.com/product_...;products_id=8

You need to measure the stroke and get the correct attachment point style.

Incidentally, the actuator in my 92 BFN Vdrive failed completely, and I just simply never replaced it. I would lift and drop the cover manually. Correct Craft is just plain stealing from you at $1300.
WakeSlayer I know this was 10m years ago but where did you find the said $0.12 fuse? Near the battery or relay or under the dash? Thanks!

              Do gas shocks!

I converted mine to a tri hatch. You can go look at my 1995 super sport thread. Below are some other gas shock options.
