Is 196 a direct drive ? I think it is. Packing Glands are recommended on Vdrives because it is very difficult to reach down under and service the drive shaft. While DD's - you have all the room to make necessary adjustments. However, if you prefer a maintenance free and a dry hull - then its worth the money.

Good: Your hull stays dry, less maintenance.
Bad: Its an option and usually will run you about $300 - $500

Personally, I have a Vdrive and I have it and would highly recommend to both types of engine configuration.

Tow Rig - 2008 Chevy Silverado - Duramax Diesel - Crew Cab

Agree with JoeCos. Get it on a Vdrive but almost worthless on a direct drive. It is so easy to adjust it on a direct drive. If you don't hit anything, you will pretty much never have to mess with it. I didn't mess with one on a ski nautique for over 10 years. 700 hours later.

              Dripless

I have ordered it on my last two 196's, a 2002 and an 05. For me it is one less thing to worry about and I do like the bilge dry. Never had any problems and will order it on my next boat as well.

I like it because If you see water in your bilge you know there is somthing dripping and you can look around. I have had several water leeks from hose clamps that I would have never investagated because when I saw water in my bilge I knew it wasent from a packing gland. And IMO its better to not have that water in your bilge. I never take out my drain plug

Yeah i can't say i know anyone (including me) who changes their packing every year. It's just un-necessary/Overkill personally ill take the original packing, boats are supposed to have a little water in the bilges, that's life...and it's not like it's hard to change the packing on a DD.

I just check the drip rate the first run of each season and adjust as necessary. I replaced it on my soon to be 14 year old boat for the first time since I've owned it. Two of the little rope pieces had to be originals and the outermost one was the wrong size (too small). Still, it always had what I considered to be an acceptable drip rate. I just figured that it was time.

I can see ordering a new boat with dripless packing because you're spending the money anyway. I can see updating the packing on a vdrive because they appear to be a pain to get to. But when I considered the cost difference $200 versus $0.44 and a few minutes each year turning the wrench, I opted to stay with wax.

Do you know if the dripless is standard on the 07' 211 team. i seem to be getting pretty much water in the bilge and its not all from wet bathingsuits.

It is not standard, your dealer would have had to order it with it.

You can get gortex replacement packing for about $10 bucks, virtually dripless.

I just put the Gortex "virtually dripless" in my DD a couple months ago. Definitely better than the standard wax packing material. I had to adjust it twice initially and haven't touched it since.

What's the trick to adjusting the gortex stuff since there is no drip to go by? Is it a tightness/feel thing. I knew this at one point, but since I opted for the plain old wax rope, I've forgotten.
