I would love to have a diesel powered boat, but how can anyone justify a $40k engine upgrade unless the only fuel you have access to is diesel.2007 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV, 1995 Cobalt 200

I think when people hear diesel they probably are thinking of the torque and efficiency of a 24V Cummins or an LB7 Duramax and the like. But those engines were able to do what they did because they don't have the same environmental restrictions that diesel engines do today. It's not just getting diesel fuel on the lake. Depending on how nannied up the engine is: It's also adding DEF. Will the motor go into regen? Will it have a DPF? With perhaps extended idle times picking up riders, will the engines run into coking issues? How often will injectors need to be changed? How difficult will the service be and who will be qualified to work on it? A dealer that has been working on LS V-8s for years will have a steep learning curve to work on diesel. Will shops have to get their techs diesel qual'd? Or will the sales be small enough Nautique will have a traveling tech? Will you call your CAT/Cummins/Detroit dealer to work on the engine?
I absolutely love the concept, but there's a reason a lot of operators of HD trucks have gone to big gas engines and it's the reason Ford has their new 6.6 and 7.3 gassers.
I guess though at the end of the day if you can afford to spend $250k+ on a recreation boat, you can afford to not even consider the economics of the barriers to diesel.

Have you been in an X24 or any of the other new 24 foot boats? An X24 has considerably less usable room than a G23. Malibu, MC and many others are marketing pros; general public sees a larger number and they undoubtedly assume it is a bigger boat. Keep in mind Malibu counts the sponson tips in the total length of their MLX and MXZ models. Those nonfunctional bow decorations add minimum of 150 to 200mm in unproductive length.

My guess is they will either be bringing the same electric engine to the G23 or bringing the electric GS to the US. Why do I think this? First: I heard they were going to announce an electric boat in September and a new surf boat in October. But the Sept. announcement was delayed. In addition, I found a cached page on Google that hints at an electric G23 announcement that has been removed. Here is a screen shot:
I would also speculate that we are conflating two unique announcements. One is that they announce an electric G/GS here in the US. Another is that they announce a completely new gas or diesel Surf boat. The G is a great boat, but it is loosing ground in the high-end surf market because it needs an update to compete with the best of the best.
The electric GS is already on our shores and is being used/tested on Lake Tahoe daily. It is not a secret as anyone who attended the recent Surf Across Tahoe event could have snapped photos of it and shared them all over the internet; just no major announcement on Nautique's part through authorized sites. It's coming.
