Hello everyone, I have actually been here in the past with this same dilemma. Earlier this year I was considering the new 22MXZ and the G21, ultimately going with the MXZ based on the wave and dealer relationship, now with the multitude of problems (some small, some big) I am back considering the G21 to replace the MXZ. I found that we put so much emphasis on the Power Wedge and the height of the wave on the Malibu but we never really use it off the Ramp setting as this seems to be the most playful. When I demoed both the G21 and the G23 the wave just seemed to be really weak compared to the MXZ, however, now I realized they are similar seeing how you cannot select the highest level on the power wedge and still have a clean wave, not to mention the obvious fit and finish differences. One, Can you get a taller wave like the MXZ with more weight or does the NSS not like more weight to produce a bigger wave and is the ZR4 enough for the G21 with added weight or should I upgrade the engine as well? Two, how is the gas mileage on the G boats, the MXZ holds 48 gallons and with everything full and surfing all day we can go through a tank in about 5 hours on the 410 motor. Thanks again for all you insight.

Weird you are concerned about wave height on a G21 as most everything I’ve read about it is that it’s too tall and most people are trying to get it longer. NSS does not like a ton of extra weight, but adding some does seem to result in a better wave. With both NCRS and NSS on the G you should be able to get whatever kind of wave you desire.

Not sure if you have a length restriction, but I would demo a '16+ G23. Bing difference from a G21 on stock ballast. That said, I found the G21 benefits more from an offset of weight to the surf side..... extra 300-400 lbs in the back, on the surf side, really woke up the wave on my G21. The newer G23 hulls are a whole different game, and a different wave. One thing that can't be said about the 16+ G23, is that it is low on push/power. The wave is extremely firm, and very powerful. It is so firm, in fact, that it can be challenging to ride. It is less forgiving and can rip your board out from underneath you a lot easier than what you'd be used to with the Bu. However, given a little time riding it, you learn it well, and the difference ends up only being a huge advantage.
as for fuel mileage- I always found the Bu's to be worse because of dragging a wedge around. That has a huge impact, on fuel economy. On the other hand, the Gs are very heavy and not very good on fuel either. Also, in the case of the G, I would definitely suggest a prop change.
for what it is worth, this is what I got with my G.....
2016 G23 with 550/2:1 and stock 17x17 prop- 8-10 gph regularly. (IIRC the average was something like 8.5. I have it on here somewhere in my prop testing thread)
2017 G23 with 550/2:1 and stock 17x17. Same as above
same 2017 G23 with a 17x19.5 prop dropped my fuel usage down to a 6gph average, and cut my surf RPMs down from 3300 to 2900. Way less fuel, way less noise, and absolutely no issue on power.
My total season fuel fuel usage went from 1047 gallons last year, down to 692 this year, and ran the boats almost exactly the same amount of hours.

The ZR4 will be enough for the G21. I had it in my 2014 G21 and even with 2,000 extra lbs in ballast, the boat would get on plane just fine.
Speaking of extra ballast, it really isn't needed for surfing. I experimented with all sorts of different weight set ups, and sure it made the wave bigger/longer, but the extra effort wasn't worth it imo. Now I surf with full stock ballast and 400lbs of lead under the port seats. NCRS at 3 to help lengthen the wave, 11.1 mph.
All of these boats today create great surf waves. I think it's silly to nit pick the waves and make a big purchase on minor differences in the wave instead of fit and finish of the boat. If you truly want the best surf wave, buy an older centurion and slam it with 5,000lbs.

I am gonna give the guys at shorestation a call and see if I have a little wiggle room on the capacity numbers. I would love to go G23 but the difference ends up being almost 20k between them. At least I got some time before the boat show in Feb to decide lol
First question I'd ask, is if you have a "shoremaster" or a "shorestation". You mention both.....
If it is a shorestation, I wouldn't worry about it one bit. Those are tested at double the max capacity to ensure that they won't fail if an uncovered boat fills up with water while on the lift. Also, for what it is worth, my neighbor has a 2013 G23 and a 5k capacity shorestation. He has gone 5 years without a single issue, and has accidentally lifted his boat with full ballast a couple times (got talking and forgot to empty), and it handled it fine.
I know the shoremasters aren't quite as stout as a shorestation, but they are pretty good lifts as well. I think they'd be fine handling 7k.

I called the dealer to check, she said it would be fine right on the capacity number but anything over that would void my warranty. Does anyone know ruffley what a G23 and G21 weight with fuel and gear? I’m sure I would never come home with a full tank so real world numbers anyone?

As luck would have it, I know that as well...... I have truck scales at my mill, and I weighed my 14 G21 and 16 G23. With fuel and gear they were 6680 and 7040 respectively. Hardly any difference between them.
(i only have the trailer tare weight from the G21..... so used that for both figures. I doubt there is any more than 40-50lbs difference on the G23 trailer)Last edited by Wayward; 10-26-2017, 02:30 PM.
