What year 4Runner? If a 4th gen, have him turn off his traction control by locking the center diff. Boats will pull my '07 backwards down our steep gravel drive (wheels seemingly locked) but its the traction control thats actually doing all the fighting. No issues once its defeated.

The G is a beast of a boat for sure... but if the trailer has good brakes, the truck isnt squatting too bad- usually requiring a WDH, or at a minimum, air bags, and the vehicle is within its tow rating and NOT exceeding GVWR, I dont see what the problem is. The 4Runner and JGC are 2 "midsize" SUV's that have better towing credentials than some full size trucks.

That said, the above picture certainly looks a little funky. I cant quite wrap my hands around whats going on in the hitch area.

Take some pics and post up for us if you dont mind. Would love to see what that looks like. Hopefully you dont hurt anybody.
thats pretty funny, I find some of your comments hard to believe and I honestly dont care. I have towed 10k lbs from Michigan to Montana several times behind our 2011 F150 through the mountains without much of an issue. I guess it depends on the person. My guess is that most of the people on here can afford to drive whatever they want so they feel they need to tell everyone else that they NEED a F450 to pull a 8k lb boat...lol. Our RZ2 weighs around 5k with gear plus trailer 6600lbs....no issue at all for GC. The G23 will be around 7200lbs, once again not an issue.

We just bought a 2014 GC Limited with the 3.6L V6 and 8 speed trans. It was between the 4Runner, Durango, and Grand Cherokee. 4Runner was the biggest disappointment with only 4700 lb tow rating and keeping the same drive train for the new model in 2014. Came down to the GC and Durango. We found there to actually be more second row room in the GC. I think they had to sacrafice space in the second row of the Durango to get the thrid row in. I have not checked specs on them, but in real life car seat tests, the GC won. Plus, the GC wins hands down for looks alone.

I thought about waiting for the diesel GC to come out later this year, but the $4500 upgrade was not worth it to me. 6200 lbs towing is good enough for me, and I am getting 22 mpg on the highway.

Also, read up on SAE J2807...puts a lot of this "I hope you don't kill anybody" crap to bed. If you personally don't feel comfortable towing something don't do it, but as long as you are within the tow ratings, you should be fine.

Adam, it will be great to hear how the JGC holds up for you... my only concern with them is the long term reliability. They certainly are good looking trucks, and the specs are pretty impressive. I think it would be about the only midsize SUV on my list if I were in the market today- to get similar capabilities, you need to compare it to full size SUV's. I too, am unimpressed with the current 4Runner- I was really disappointed when they dropped the V8 option with the latest generation. I love my '07 with the 4.7L... 7k lb tow rating and a trouble free 150k on the clock thus far.

Theres always one. Yep go ahead and bust the ratings. And educate yourself, that tow rating is for an empty GC and a 175lb ish driver. Every additional pound, person or whatever you put in the GC thats a pound less you can tow. So with 4 folks, some gear... maybe you'll only be 1500-2k over your tow rating.

What funny is you ignoring 10-15 G owners saying these boats are ridiculously heavy.... Iron weighed lightly loaded G his on a CAT scale at 8500. Not one of the owners towing with a 1/2ton says its a comfy tow. I gotta use 4WD just to pull out of the water and I am on an "A" level ramp on with a gentle granny slope. Has nothing to do with money.

I too have towed a 9500lb RV thru Allegheny(Feb under icy conditions) and Smoky Mountains with this same 5.7 Tundra. Aerodynamics(11' 3" up to the tow point), lack of weight distributing hitch and.... oh ya those electric brake things make your 11k comparision invalid. Apples and oranges. This feels like a much heavier tow.

Who knows, maybe you got one of the special Gs with the lightweight package. Have fun stopping that quickly on a wet road with oil residue.

I have to agree with the post above. I tow my G with a 2005 diesel Excursion, and I wouldn't want to tow with anything lighter. On wet roads, I have locked my wheels up trying to stop with the G before, and the Excursion weighs over 8K pounds! If I see a Grand Cherokee pulling a G, I will simply pull over and get out of the way. I don't want to be anywhere close to that on the road.

I towed my 2003 210 with a Grand Cherokee (it was a '99, but still) and that was about as much weight as I would have wanted behind that thing.

I know to you rich guys time is money, but maybe you should spend an extra few minutes and empty the ballast tanks before you get on the road. Just kidding.

I hear ya Tim. That was on my mind when we bought. You nailed it though...there really are very few mid-sized SUVs with decent tow ratings. We had a Tahoe and did not want to go full size again. I was disappionted that Toyota did not opt to reinstate that V8 in the 4 runner for the new model.

The GVCWR is 13100lbs for a 2011/14 Grand cherokee with the Hemi and max tow package. Curb weight is 5020lbs (includes all fluids and full tank of fuel), The hemi max tow rating is 7200lbs. The leaves 900lbs for payload capacity(occupants/gear). The newer grand cherokees have more capability then several of the half ton trucks offered in the market.

Im not going to argue what people have said on here about what some G boats have weighed. Im strictly going by what the manufacture says the G boat weighs. My local dealer has sold over 13 G boats this year and they have been all pulled around with older Tahoes, yukons, and suburbans. Not one time has anyone mentioned any issues complaining about towing them either. The automotive manufactures must list the curb weight of a vehicle correctly, if they do not they can get in trouble. Maybe in the boat world you can hide 1300lbs of options on a boat and not disclose them on the specfications.

You do realize that a full tank of gas is 500 more pounds and the trailer is another 1500+ lbs.
Tahoes, Yukons and Suburbans are much heavier vehicles than a Jeep, with a wider and longer wheelbase, therefore much more stable to tow with.

You're going to be at least 1,000 pounds over your stated tow rating, assuming you carry absolutely nothing else in your boat. Are you really going to risk this? If anything happens, insurance won't cover you. Please don't do this...
