I'm surprised you didn't feel like the brakes were underpowered for the task. And I do trailer safely, slower, wider turns, and more spacing as one would with a heavy load. I personally feel that a 1/2ton is capable (though at its limit), while a 3/4ton is in command, and I prefer the latter. To cpan13's point I wouldn't be surprised if an insurance company used that fact to get out of being at fault...I know I've seen a few hitch ratings on 1/2ton require a weight distributing hitch to reach their max rated capacity.
