So let me ask a stupid amp power question...

Say you have 2 subs that are 500 watt RMS, your powering them with an amp that is capable of 500 watts @ 2 ohms. Am I correct in thinking that the 2 subs will share the 500 and basically get 250 watts each? Meaning that I would probably get more sound from 1 sub that 2? Does this sound about right?

Yes, that would be 250 watts to each of two 4-ohm subs. But unless the amplifier is strictly regulated then you will lose a good percentage of that power when you run the amplifier into a single 4-ohm sub. So if its a single sub the optimum voice coil would be 2-ohms. i only raise this point in case you already have the subs. There is no set answer to that question without a few qualifications. Its easier to get more bass output in an open field environment with more surface area (two woofers) versus more excursion (a single woofer driven harder). Alot is going to depend on whether both woofers are collected and symmetrically loaded or separated, whether you are using an optimum enclosure or making compromises to make two woofers fit, and how sensitive or responsive the woofers in question are. It could go either way.

I currently have 2 - 10" Kicker Comp VR's DVC 2ohms. I'm really only powering them with about 400 watts total @ 2 ohms. My box is not optimum, being it is a single enclosure for both subs. I am planning on building a new enclosure that will keep each sub in it's own sealed enclosure, but still be one box. After reading up I think this is a better way of going about things. I have an '03 SANTE and would like to keep the passenger compartment free to store things in. I plan to keep the encloseure behind the drivers seat. Right now the subs fire down and there is only about 2 inches air space there. If I'm going to build a new enclosure I would like to make it perform the best I could. Do you have any advice for me? I also want to re-amp them so I'm feeding them with the proper power. If it is easier let me know and we can take this to the phone.
