I feel that Malibu just does a better job than any other tow boat manufacturer on the seats. They use multiple layers of foam in varying densities. The vinyl, stitching and design is just second to none. (though I have seen some mismatches in seams on some recent models that makes me wonder). In fact, when we bought the LSV I was torn between a Nautique and the LSV. My wife made the final decision based on the interior comfort. Seatback angles, curved cushions in the corners, no gelcoat to touch when you are sitting around. Nautique is a lot better on interior comfort than they used to be but Malibu has not stood still either. They are much closer than in 2004.

My 2004 LSV did NOT have the smallish bow that the new LSV has. It was still much roomier feeling. The new LSV feels even bigger. The drivers seat is not as far toward the center as the Nautique, storage lockers are bigger and have larger openings, the underseat storage is more generous.

All of that said and with me being fully aware of it all I still went with the 230. We do not use the boat the same way we did when the kids were small. We used to 'hang' on the lake all day. (ski in morning, anchor, wakeboard, anchor and eat lunch, tube, anchor). When the kids were really small we would bath them in the shower in the marina and put them in pajamas for the drive home. I think the 'Bu is a better boat for hanging.

Now the kids are 18 and 16. We are all too busy to 'hang'. We go ski/ride/surf/tube and get off the lake. The only functional thing the Malibu does as well or better than the 230 is driving around like a runabout or towing a tube (it is a more 'agile' boat).

So, I would say that if your priority is hanging out and using the boat as a runabout then look seriously at the Malibu. If you want the easiest boat to tow a skier/rider/surfer go for the 230.

Here are the reasons that I went with the Nautique over the Malibu:

230 bow stays down under acceleration and when towing. (easier to see) and Malibu bow points high.
230 throttle is MUCH easier to operate smoothly and accurately.
230 is less disturbed by wake crossing but a bit more affected by rollers from the side.
230 bimini is far better than the current Malibu bimini.
230 maintains bow storage lockers with the factory ballast (I keep anchor, etc. up there)
NSS seemed to work more naturally than Surf Gate + Wedge.
Walk-thru transom and the gelcoat on the interior. Even though not as 'comfy' as the padded and carpeted Malibu interior I believe that it will be easier to maintain. Especially since we do 1-2 hour evening runs and have to put it up wet sometimes.
I like the Nautique Linc system better than Malibu's dash (just preference thing).

Malibu has a ski pylon. This almost kept me from the 230 but I am gonna risk that. Have not skied behind it yet (only ski when water is right). I may eventually move to a GS if that becomes a real issue but the older I get the less slalom I do.

One last thing... in my area I have had great experiences with BOTH the Nautique and Malibu dealers. I have become personal friends with the Malibu folks and fully expect to do the same with the Nautique dealer. It felt like I was cheating on my wife to even look and the Nautique but here I am :-)

      Thanks again. One more question.

Out of the box, which seems to be a better surf boat? I know you said NSS is more natural, but which boat has the better surf wave in your opinion?

I have not surfed behind a Surf Gate equipped Malibu so I can't really help with that.
I do recommend that you quit thinking in terms of 'best' and focus on what works for you. The 'Bu seems to have a very long, smooth wake. The Nautique is steeper but seems to be shorter. Which is better?

Here is my 230 wave with my son learning. All stock and using the factory "Wakesurf" user setting. Just me (170#) and my daughter (110#) in the boat, 3/4 fuel. (I think he is about to wash out in that pick :-) )

Oh, and I am COMPLETELY sold on the walk-thru transom. I have no reservations about my choice.

          25 hour mark.

Well that went fast. We are about to take the boat in for the 25 hour service. There are a few items that the dealer will need to look at for us but we are absolutely loving the boat.

          1. Wife approved: My wife has decided that the boat is more comfortable overall than our previous boat (she LOVED the Malibu). The only thing she is asking for is a swim platform ladder because the platform is so high when ballast is empty (easy fix).

          2. Stereo and NSS glitches: We have experienced the well-documented and not always corrected stereo connection and NSS glitches.
          - Stereo will suddenly decide to change modes on its own. Once it happens the Linc screen will no longer control the stereo.
          - NSS will simply refuse to engage or sporadically disengage (port side only). Workaround is to press the switch button twice. Very infrequent but strange.
          - I am confident the dealer will get these resolved.

          3. Did I say we love the boat???? We love the boat.
          - easy to setup surf wake
          - very nice sounding stereo (JL Audio, factory 8.8 tower speakers, dealer installed amps and sub)
          - very, very easy to pull rider. great throttle control, stable
          - love the Linc system in general now that I have a few hours with it
          - storage is better than I expected given that we have pro-ballast so no rear lockers
          - best driver ergonomics I have ever experienced on any boat
          - easy to clean

          4. More difficult to maneuver at low speeds than the Malibu was.
          - higher freeboard and sail for a bimini catches wind
          - does not turn as sharp
          - steering response slower than Malibu
          - All things you get used to with a little time

          5. Skiing wake is better than we expected it would be.
          - decent open water skiing with light load
          - a bit of water in the forward tank seems to smooth it out a bit

(did I say we love the boat????)

          7. Transom walk thru design is perfect for what this boat is designed for.

          6. This boat gets more attention than any other boat I have owned.
          - People are coming up and asking to just look at it.
          - I get "What kind of boat is that????" a lot
          - Catch people taking pics of the boat.

(did I say we love the boat????)

          7. Oh and the folks at the dealer are great! Thanks Buxton.,

You will need to add ballast beyond the Pro Ballast to get it to surf. Especially on the Port side.

That is coming. We are all just learning to wakesurf so it is good now. Will probably look at the wakemakers package pretty soon.

                  LSV pros:
                  - LSV Is quite a bit roomier and has more storage than the 230.
                  - LSV is a lot quieter and has less driveline vibration. Much more 'luxury' feeling.
                  - Unloaded (no ballast, wakeplate up) the LSV Is more responsive both steering and throttle.
                  - passenger seating is more comfortable

                  230 pros:
                  - 230 handles MUCH better loaded.
                  - 230 is easier to drive when actually towing someone.
                  - 230 Linc is great. I like it better than the Malibu screens.
                  - less carpet to get wet.
                  - surf pipe standard
                  - I prefer the 230 tower. More unobtrusive.
                  - Bimini is great.
                  - walk thru transom
                  - 230 slow speed handling a bit more sluggish

230 is a great boat but so is the Malibu. I am very happy with my 230 so far.

i always thought the same on noise of drive line. Indmar stuff seems smoother and quieter. PCM stuff is loud in comparison. Maybe PCM is stronger and has less issues but I can't remember hearing about a lot of failures with Indmar.
