I've been wanting to get a boat for a couple of years. We live on a private lake, and while the jetskis are fun, trying to wakeboard behind one sucks. Last summer, we picked up a Sea Doo Wake Pro 215, with the hopes the wake was better than the one from our pair of RXP-X 260s... not really. It was okay for towing a tube, some kneeboarding, but with a sloppy 6" wake (at best), it wasn't really exciting. I even tried loading it up with 300lbs of ballast - no improvement. Even worse, I'd pull the thing around so hard it got to be a challenge for my wife to keep it upright at times.
A few months ago, I started seriously looking at boats. When my wife was out of town, my 9 year old daughter and I "built" a G23 online... and were a bit shocked by the price. The wife vetoed the idea, but conceded that a Yamaha ~ $55k was ok. We hit the OC Boat Show in Maryland a couple weeks ago, got a look at the only wake/ski boat there (a Yamaha 212X), and went to the Baltimore Boat Show this past weekend with the intention of checking out and most likely buying a 242 Limited S. I'd read the "if you want a proper wakeboat, buy one, the jet boats suck for surfing, wakeboarding, etc" posts - but had almost convinced myself that if we put 1800# of ballast in one, it might be ok.
We get to the show, and while walking back to check out our two custom '12 RXP-Xs that were on display at the Miss Geico Racing booth, I saw Chessie Marine's booth with a Malibu, Axis and a pair of Nautiques (a 230 and a G23). My wife was like "it won't hurt to look at them while we're here..." as our daughter is flipping out because the G23 looks almost identical to the one she and I had designed.
The 230 was nice - for sure. My wife tells me that the instant we stepped into the G23, she could see the lust in my eyes. To be fair, we did go check out the 242 Limited S, but after going over the G23 for an hour, I had no interest in it. The difference in build quality and components between the two was amazing.
We left a deposit and are heading up next week to take it out (and for me to ride behind) to make 100% sure it's what we want. It's supposed to get fitted with the NSS prior to delivery in 3-4 weeks (which is good timing, the water is cold and low right now).
Blown budget aside, my wife is happy, as this is the proverbial nail in the coffin of my track day/motorcycle racing hobby, which has been on "hiatus" since a friend of mine got killed when we were out in November '11. This makes much more sense than the big RV and all the gear used to make the bikes fun, and they'll be right out there with me. Both my wife and daughter picked out their new wakeboards last night - is it April yet?
