    Limp mode

saw many posts on "limp mode" causes, but wanted to see if another possibility exists. bad batteries, i.e. not enough juice? took my 96 SS out yesterday for the first time this season. had to use a battery pack to get it to start, but once it did it ran fine (for a while). we stopped a couple times and had to use the battery pack each time to start back up. i definitely know the batteries are not holding a charge. by the end of the day the boat went into limp mode, back firing, the whole works. so i am curious to see if anyone thinks that the system is just not getting enough amps which would then cause sensor problems elsewhere and sending it into limp mode. thanks in advance for any comments.

    RE: Limp mode

What makes you know that the engin was in "limp mode"?
    Because it back fires?
    The engine starts good?
    What thortle position?
I don't think that low voltage can induce "limp mode". Once the engine is workin, and if your alternator have no problems, you should have the correct voltage.
I had a problem with back fire, if you can put more information, maybe i can help you.

thanks, fonseca. i guess i don't know for sure if it was in limp mode. i just assumed that with the way it was acting. at 75% throttle it stayed just above idle. we had to use a portable battery jumper everytime we started up the boat, so the engine definitely didn't start good all day without the help of the jumper. once it did start it was fine while we were cruising around. it was only on the last start- up to head home that the boat didn't want to stay running even with the battery pack. we finally got it started long enough to throttle forward, and that's when we noticed that it wasn't going much faster than idle. then it started to backfire enough for me to just turn it off and get towed. i definitely know the batteries weren't holding any charge. the volt meter barely moved when the key was turned, and the radio, bilge and other accessories would not work when the engine was not running. i just figured we had jumped the thing too many times and the computer sensed something wrong (not enough voltage) and put it into limp mode. i'd say overall, we had to use the battery pack to jump it about 10 times that day.

Yes your alternator is probably dead and when the booster pak was low also the engine wasn't getting enough juice to spark reliably.

I recomend you to confirm the pressure of the fuel injection sistem.
You should have, at least, 40 psi, and the pressure should not drop when engine working.
If you search all of my posts you will find one named excalibur backfires.
I think you have the same problem.
          I wish you good luck.
