    Powder Coating the Windshield Frame

I have been considering taking the windshield off and having it powder coated to match the tower.

First, I assume this can be done?

But, will I need to take out the glass in order to have the frame powdercoated or can they just mask the glass off?

RE: Powder Coating the Windshield Frame

    Yup, it can be done.

I believe you have no choice but to disassemble the windshield. Someone correct me if Im wrong- powdercoating involves putting a charge on the metal and spraying the powder, then baking the piece in an oven. I dont think you would want to subject the glass and rubber gaskets to the oven.

Reassembly was a PITA, as the glass was in the frame pretty tight to begin with and the powder makes it tighter. Im glad I did it though- I love the look.

      looks awesome!
it would be impossible to do a good job with everything still intact, but good news is that disassembly is just as easy as putting together a fisher-price toy :P

I just finished mine. Decided to tint the glass while I was at it. Getting it back in was a PITA.

We powder coat here at my shop. You will have to dissasemble the WS. Most powders are cured at 400F so rubber will burn. Make sure your coater removes all of the old finish or that may burn too. If you decide on any metallic finishes make sure you request a clear top coat or the finish will not hold up. Pay attention to any tight fitting components, the coating may be up to 3 Mils thick. The coating is tough to remove after curing so give your coater specific instructions.Draw a picture!

Dwhitt - the tinted WS looks great. I have same color boat and thought that would be cool.

                powder coat vs anodizing

I have disassembled my windshield with the intention of new powder coat. One plating company suggest anodizing due to durability and close tolerance issues.

Any suggestions? How does it weather vs powder coat? I want to go with silver like the newer boats but my silver powdercoat tower has taken a severe beating over the years and is sun damaged.

                Suggestions...
