    Bilge is killing the engine

I have a 2006 SV211 and when I turn on the bilge (manually or auto), the engine immediately dies. No standing water in the hull. What is causing it to kill the motor? Bilge works perfectly when the engine is turned off. Thanks. John

Probably a bad ground connection somewhere in the system. Are the battery cables and clamp in good shape? Battery cables can wick up acid from the battery and corrode internally. Try taking jumper cables and use them to test. Connect the negative cable to the battery negative terminal and the other end to a solid metal point on the engine. Sometimes that’s a good conductor. Such as an unpainted bolt. See if the problem goes away. Try the same thing with the positive but connect the engine end to the large bolt on the starter where the large red cable is connected. Don’t touch the positive cable to anything else on the engine that is metal. Otherwise you’ll make a lot of sparks and potentially damage something.

Sounds like something in the bilge circuit is causinig a short. Years ago my 68 El Camino would immediately shut off if the floor high beam switch was changed from hi to low - replaced switch and fixed problem. Took switch apart and found failed internals. Maybe try unhooking wires to bypass switch - like hot wiring the bilge pump
