Spare Part Recommendations - 1997 PCM GT40 ProBoss

    Hello All,

With summer finally approaching here in the midwest, we are getting ready to launch our '97 GT40 in the coming month. Queue the trepidation as I prepare to turn that ignition key for the first time and pray that no gremlins worked their evil magic over the winter storage months. To stave off those fears as best as I can, I figure it would be helpful to at least have a fully stocked inventory of the parts most likely to fail so when the inevitable happens (as I know it must, the thing is almost 30 years old after all!), I am ready for a hot swap. Below is what I currently have on hand (Part), the number I have (Count), and if/when the part was replaced. I would be very grateful to you all more experienced owners if you could point out the things I'm missing/understocked on. First thing that comes to my mind is probably some relays? Thank you in advance, hope to see you out there soon!

If your goal is to have every part that can cause you to be dead in the water, then you're missing a lot. It would be quite an investment to have everything on hand. Here's what I'm sure is a partial list that your missing.

    Ignition Module
    Map Sensor
    Throttle Position Sensor
    Distributor Cap
    Rotor Button
    Fuel injector(s)
Water Temp Sensor (ECM - the one for gauge isn't critical)
    Oil Pressure Switch
    Fuel Pump and ECM relay
    Throttle AIR Bypass Valve
    Low Pressure Fuel Pump
    Hight Pressure Fuel Pump
    Fuel Pressure Regulator
    Spark Plugs
    Spark Plug wires

IDK, I've never really had any issues with breakers and I've owned quite a few older boats. I've spent quite a bit of time on Lake Erie where distances to safe harbor and density of boats to lend assistance can be far and few between. As such I've carried quite a few spares of what I've considered essentials. Here's what's made the list for onboard or at least close at hand inventory.....

Fuel Filters - Filters will ruin your day quicker than anything else I know. The MCs had the one in the tank and that was it. The PCMs like to have at least 2. At least one of each would be at the top of my list.
Fuel pump - MCs and Malibu's of your era where known for bad pumps. The MC in tank pumps would fail if you ran the tank below 1/4 from overheating. The earlier engine block mounted pumps were good for about 300 - 400 hours before giving it up. Don't know enough about the PCM pumps but on a 30YO boat that would be something I would look at.
Fuel Pressure Regulator - Once again, don't know about PCM but ~2000 model year boats with the external fuel pump were know for bad regulators. I've replace the one on the BIL's boat three times now. Symptoms can really throw you for a loop as the regulator doesn't just fail but can become intermittent. The engine will sometimes load up at idle, miss or buck at high RPM and when it gets bad the PP will kick on and off from the misses. The first time took us forever to isolate as the problem would keep going away. After that we just replace it if we have any misses or if the engine is loading up at idle. Has resolve the issues consistently. There's one sitting in the garage ready to go.
Thermostat - Really getting out there with this but if you're stocking breakers you may want to have a thermostat in stock. They go bad and when they do it's not a good thing.
Belts/hoses - Not sure if/when you've replaced any of these but at 30 it would be worth looking at both and replacing then keeping the old ones as spares.
Prop - I boat on the same lakes but you never know when you may hit something that made it's way into the water. Lake Erie is scary for this as I've seen telephone poles floating just below the surface. Assuming no drivetrain damage, having a spare prop can save a session or weekend.
Electrical - I always carried a couple feet of 12ga/14ga wire and heat shrink butt connectors.
Glues/Gasket Maker/sealants - I carried small tubes of each in my Lake Erie kit and have the full size versions for home. One item that has come along more recently that I carrier even for the 70 Mustang on trips is fusion tape. This is a miracle product that can be used for everything from taping up electrical connections to sealing split hoses. The China garbage works but if you want the real deal buy the 3M stuff for when you really need to pack something for extreme uses.

You've already covered impellers which is low hanging fruit. I used to see these fail back in the old days some 20+ years ago but not so much anymore. I used to change mine every year but ended up with a large collection of used impellers that look brand new in the garage. I started doing a 50 - 75 hour maintenance schedule with these and was still collecting near new looking impellers.

That's about all I can think of off hand.

Thank you both for those suggestions, it's just what I was looking for! I will keep updating my shared list in case anyone else is interested in this type of thing as well.
