'97 Ski Nautique - Gas Tank is out - What should I replace now?

Had to replace the sending unit.
Looking behind there (first time its ever been removed) I'm wondering if there is anything else I should be replacing before tucking her back into place?

I'm thinking I should pull the rudder and re-grease that. The air lines for the speed? They look ok - but they are from 1997 and made of rubber...

And the worse part of removing it? Getting the hoses off the tank! I only removed the vent and filler hoses - the others had enough slack.

Yup. 30-year old hoses are a b!tch to get off. Be sure to get the reed type sending unit and not the swing arm type. Moeller is a very good brand.

Yes, grease the rudder shaft. Another nice tip for the future is to replace the zerk fitting with a rubber hose zerk fitting "extender" or relocation kit. That way one can grease the rudder shaft without having to pull the tank. If you can float the boat on the trailer (while the tank is out), you can determine if the rudder shaft packing is leaking. Unlike the prop shaft, the rudder shaft packing really shouldn't leak. If it is leaking, take your tools and tighten the gland nut until the leak stops. If it doesn't stop, then it may be time to re-pack the shaft stuffing.

Be sure to clean your anti-siphon valve and the inlet filter.

And while I'm spending YOUR time on this, I would align the engine/transmission to the shat and strut. It's easier when all the surrounding stuff is out of the way.

+1 for repacking the rudder and adjusting the packing nuts. I wouldn't check for leaks first...I'd just refresh the packing as it's simple now. My '97 Ski leaked quite a bit of water through the rudder shaft.

Easy time to change your steering cable. Candidly, I didn't know how crunchy mine was was until I replaced it. Now my steering feels like a '78 Cadillac. Like buttah!

Pop your muffler out and check the bottom for friction spots. The muffler should have a pad that keeps it from rubbing on the hull but it gets old. Friction spots can wear through causing exhaust water to leak into the bilge.

Verify your aft transom exhaust clamp looks good and is tight.

Get out the degreaser and clean out the back of the bilge.

It's all relatively easy now that you've gotten everything open. Have fun!

I'll attack the rudder this weekend.

I was sold the swing-arm type by nautqueparts?

Cable was replaced last week - it was VERY crusty - the only time I'm behind the wheel is when I'm launching it or taking it out for the season so I didn't realize how bad it was getting.

Already cleaned out behind there - nasty!

I'll look under the muffler (with my inspection camera) to make sure the rubber is in place - if not - then I'll pull it.

        thanks!!!!!

Attacking the rudder - well, that CAN be done with the tank in place - just a bit harder - and given my trailer does not have a removeable rudder guard (I didn't know it was a thing) I'll be skipping that until I have a better plan.
