Stress test for winterization

Good or bad I think this is going to be one of those years where we get to see how well some of our winterizations techniques worked out in actual practice. It was -12 yesterday and -7 this morning where I keep my boat in a unheated pole barn with cement floors. Pretty confident in my process as it's worked in previous years but you never really know until you have a stress test like this.

I follow the process in the manual, drain everything and fill with -100 marine antifreeze. No short cuts but as stated above you really never know when it gets this cold for an extended period.

Agreed. This will be a year that will show what works and what doesn't. On my personal boats, I just drain them and don't backfill with antifreeze, but I live in NC where the temps don't get that low. It is going to be 11° tomorrow night though. Customer boats always get the full treatment with antifreeze.

I also have the 1985 twin-engine Sea Nautique sitting unwinterized in an unheated garage right now with an Xtreme Heater in the bilge. One of my guys broke off the block drains a couple of years ago while trying to remove them, so we currently can't drain it!! It has been fine for the past couple of years like that. I just checked it a couple of days ago to make sure the heater was still running, and it is.

Being an Albertan, we see some pretty extreme weather. I have one of my boats in a heated garage and the others unheated and have never had an issue. Drain everything and fill with antifreeze has worked for years.
