Just curious about normal life expectancy of my cutlass bearing. My previous Mastercraft did not need a replacement during my almost 30 years of ownership!

How do you know your cutlass bearing is loud? I don't think I have ever heard a noise from a cutlass bearing, since it is under the boat.Please do not PM me directly asking for advice on how to repair your boat. Well, you ask a great question and I might be jumping to an incorrect conclusion. The “whine” is only presenting during idle or near idle in gear. By about 1500 “ish” rpm the whine disappears or is drowned out by other engine or environmental noise. I’ve checked my transmission fluid which was nice and pink and full. With this info I stopped in and spoke with my local inboard mechanic who said it was likely a cutlass bearing. He said it’s not a very big issue as they have a hydraulic device that pushes the old bearing out. Only the prop needs to be removed. About 2 hrs labor and the new bearing.
I’m interested in others opinions about what could be causing this noise. I’ve owned the boat about 5 years and this whine is something new. Thanks Jeff!Comment
