    Transmission Fluid Change G23

Changed out the Transmission Fluid Thursday after we pulled the boat out from a lake run.
I’ve mentioned it before, but the must have here if you are changing your own fluids is a pressurized oil extractor. I use the 2 Uncles Extractor and it comes with a multitude of different size lines and attachments – Not affiliated and have nothing to compare it to.
Fluid was hot and came out super-fast with just a few pumps on the extractor. This is the 1st time I have done this, and felt around a little with the extractor hose to make sure I was on the bottom of the trans. I refilled at 1 ½ quarts, and then measured how much was extracted, 1 ½ quarts. The manual indicates 2 quarts, which means I left 16 ounces behind, hmm. Next time, I think I will run a smaller hose to see if I can’t get in a little deeper and measure the output. Open to suggestions if anyone has some thoughts here. In my mind 1 /12 quarts of fresh fluid is better than none.
Dealer says they did a change out 2 seasons ago with Dexron VI, but that fluid looked pretty dark to me for only 2 Seasons?

Next time, a little time on the shop vac followed by some air pressure, definitely not the cleanest area in the boat.

    Pretty straight forward

Wasn't sure which funnel was going to fit the bill, but the adjustable measured unit in the middle was by far the best choice.

The extractor measure out at 1 1/2 quarts, so I figured out that is what needed to go back in.

Top of the full mark, measured without screwing cap down (as per manual)

Left some fluid and the funnel in the engine bay. Will check levels again on warm up next trip out.

Double checking measurement accuracy of the extractor, and visual inspection of the fluid.

Yup, 1 1/2 quarts. Does that fluid look a little dark to you?

I hope this helps someone, easy to tackle yourself. Let me know if I missed something, always willing to learn and/or make things easier.

Easy enough, I just did mine while the floor was out(New ballast pump for aftermarket bags install) definitely not the cleanest area but I dont expect it to be either.

I was curious how bad it would be to get to with the floor in but it looks manageable!!

Hello Scooter G - I also have a '22 G23 with the ZZ8... I'm at 400 hours (I bought the boat used at 200 hours) and I'm trying to learn how to change the transmission fluid... Your post seems perfect, but for whatever reason, I'm not able to see the pics nor download the attachment... Is this issue just me, or is everyone experiencing this? I also can't seem to access the attached PDF, but feel it would be tremendously helpful! Is there any chance you might be able to please re-attach or otherwise send directly to me, please?

      Thanks so much in advance!

This is one of the posts that got caught up in a site issue we had a few months back. Some attachments were lost during that outage, and this is one of those posts.

Scooter G is welcome to edit the original post and reattach the attachments if he wants to.

Hey Jeff, not a huge quirk, but what I noticed, when updating some of these old posts, all the original posted pics were a .jpg format.
The system will not accept that format any more. All the pics need to be resaved in a .jpeg format. Not sure, I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to tech.

          doug.conyers thanks for the comment.
Do take into account that this was on my 2016 G23 with the H6 450HP. The process is the same, but I can't promise you anything on fluid type or quantities.
I will probably do a fluid change on the ZZ8 this fall, and can update this thread at that point. If you get it all figured out prior to that, would be interested to know.
          Thanks,
          ~Scooter

              You got it doug.conyers!
Let me know what's different in the ZZ8 process please. I haven't home worked it yet, but we are only at 115 hours, so we have a couple of days to catch you, working on it, lol.

I had a piece of copper tubing left over from an ice maker waterline. A 12” long piece of copper tubing fit snugly into one of the plastic hoses on my extractor. I like being able to position the stiffer line easier in the dipstick hole and also don’t worry about losing a piece of plastic in the tranny.

It appears that it's still Dexron IV ATF, correct?

So after checking my V-Drive fluid level, I went on the search for the transmission, for 15 minutes. It's either extremely hidden, or am I to understand that these are now an all in one unit? The V-drive is the transmission is the V-drive? Hmmm.
                    Help me out here please...

Edit: Found it, the transmission dipstick is tucked back in to the right and behind the v-drive. Dipstick is red.
PCM specs still call for Dexron III 2020-2023, the license was pulled by GM in 2011 and not readily available, I know Walmart still carries it. I ran Dexron VI in our '16, sources indicate that is backwards compatible with II & III. I'll do a change end of season, fluid color checked good.
I'll hunt down some Dexron III since we are still under warranty, or Nautique Parts list a synthetic trans fluid which PCM indicated for 2023 forward, anyone have any experience with this?

                    Typical Transmission Screw-In Dipstick Type
                    A. Engine/Transmission is cold; B. Engine/Transmission has been shut off for at least 2 minutes to allow fluid to drain back.
                    1. Remove the dipstick by turning the T-handle counterclockwise. Wipe the dipstick off using a clean cloth.
                    2. Re-insert the dipstick to the threads (DO NOT screw the dipstick in) and remove. Observe the fluid level.
                    3. The fluid level should be at the “FULL” mark. If low, add Pleasurecraft Premium Transmission fluid (Updated for 2023-2025 R193002) in small increments through the dipstick hole in the transmission. Repeat the checking procedures until the fluid level is at the “FULL” mark.
