Shaft Seal Replacement

I just did this job on a 09 210 last week. It had PSS seal originally and I replaced it with the GLIDE system. Much better design IMO and less likely to fail catastrophically. Tim is very helpful by phone as well. I would recommend getting the GLIDE retaining cover split and adding a second seal in front of it for easy replacement. Tim can explain what I mean much better.

I removed the coupler from the V-drive and was able to get the shaft out the front side. Back side would be the same.

I used a "Plumbing Wrench" to get leverage on the big nut. Remove the old rubber boot was a PITA. I found squirting concentrated simple green into boot and working it into the sealing surface allowed it to release the easiest.

Edit: Oh, also, I added back the safety collar to prevent dropping the shaft.

we are beginning to attempt this as well… we have a PSS right now and it has become decompressed. Thinking of changing it to the glide. What was the easiest way to access for removal?

I can't believe a year has passed and just completed the boat. I replaced the shaft, shaft seal, transmission coupling, cutlass bearings and rudder seals. While the boat was apart, I decided to replace the steering cable, upgrade the alternator to a Balmar High Output and rebuild the battery switch box.






I hope to hit the water next weekend and enjoy being out on the water again.

Project update - I ordered a new shaft assembly, replaced the cutlass bearings, and sent the rudder to Glide Bearings to have them upgrade the seals. My project is on hold as it is too hot to work in the garage, and I am lending a hand to SAN4Fun with his wiring issue.

More updates and pictures will follow once repairs resume.

Thank you for the reply glassywaters. Unfortunately the hose has disintegrated to the stuffing box and I have to take the shaft out, that is why I am going to a dripless system, otherwise, I would just repack the stuffing box. Whoever did the last repair to the unit left the collar in the wrong place - it should be towards the stuffing box end not the V-Drive.

Rudder has been removed and I will clean it up and repack it.

Trying to break the nut loose from the collar, not an easy task. I think they make a tool to lock the collar in place.

I believe that is a safety collar. (To prevent the prop from impacting the rudder if it were to break.) I would just repack your shaft stuffing with gortex rope and call it a day. I think you're right on having to remove the shaft to install a dripless system.

So I started this project today. I decided to go with the Glide Marine Seal System. I liked the fact the unit was alll in one over the PSS, where you have to keep tension on the two seals with the boot. Due to the limited working area, I decide on the GMS since once it is installed, no adjustments are needed. I do like it being water fed to keep it cool.

I removed the back seat to gain access to the V-Drive and the prop shaft.



In the picture of the prop shaft, does anyone know what the collar is used for and is it in the right spot?

The jobs are never easy, I now need to order a shaft puller to get the inverted cup off the prop shaft and then slide it hopefully out the front, more than likely it will have to go out the back. The rudder might need to be removed.

Thank you for the reply. I looked at the thread, the challenge is having a V-Drive as there is not very much space to replace the shaft seal. On a positive note - the shaft comes out through the front of the transmission so that is very accessible.

I am going to take on this project and put together step by step instructions to help someone else who may want to do the same job. I have a question about shaft seals, since the shaft has to be removed to replace the hose, why not upgrade to a different type seal and go dripless. Does anyone have a suggestion or the pros and cons of going to a different type seal?

My options are:

Original Seal - it drips - LOL


Glide Marine Seal System one piece unit or the PSS two piece unit - dripless shaft seal but requires a water feed line to the cool the seal.


The concern about the PSS is it is a two part seal and you have to slide it back an inch to keep pressure on the seal.



OJ Props Flex Gland - dripless shaft seal, does not require a water feed line.


Also, I will replace the Strut Bearing (looking to change it to a cutlass bearing) and perform a Shaft Alignment.

Good Afternoon PN Community,

After a great day out on the boat, I noticed a significant amount of water in the engine bilge and the pump running considerably more than normal. While cleaning up the boat, I decided to go looking for the possible issue. As you can see by the picture, the rubber hose on the shaft seal assembly is deteroriating. Also the shaft looks like it needs to be aligned.



So I have a several questions.

1. Has anyone tackled this project before?
2. How difficult is it?
3. Has anyone used a dripless shaft seal like OJ Flex Gland or the Glide Marine Seal System in place of the original stuffing box?
4. How difficult is it to do the shaft alignment on a V-Drive?

If I decide to do this project, I will post pictures and instructions along the way.
