    Steering tube replacment

I’ve read every thread on the subject I can find, but am still having a heck of a time trying to pull the old cable out. Boat is a 2002 SANTE. I got the hard tank out (which I plan to replace with bags), got the rudder detached and the tube nut (not sure what that’s called) off the guide tube. Spent about 45 minutes trying to pull the whole thing out from the front and have barely cleared the guide tube with the cable, so moved about 12-18”. Anyone got any tips or tricks to get it moving? Looking at the conduit that the steering tube runs through, I’m not sure the nut at the end will go through with the transmission cable and, what I assume is, the throttle cable also in the conduit.

Sorry, I know there are tons of threads on this and I thought I prepared myself for this, but it’s turning out way more difficult than anticipated. Any help is appreciated.

I'll take a stab at this. If you're not sure about whether it'll fit through the conduit, why not cut the part off that won't fit? Then, you could route the replacement cable slightly differently (just outside the conduit).

I have not done a steering cable on this boat, nor have I read the threads on it. I'm just going on what you said, trying to come up with... something?

Yeah, I am considering exactly that. I have read that others have routed the cable on top of the fuel tank. I may even try to route it like that prior to pulling the old one out, just to make sure it fits and is long enough. I just figured I'd ask for tips from others that have done the job.

For anyone that may reference this post in the future, I ended up cutting out the old cable and routing the new one on top of the fuel tank, under the floor. I was originally worried there was not room, but it proved to not be an issue.

I’m running into the same issue on my 230. Can’t get cable past my center ballast and can’t get the ties cut. About to rip my hair out so gave up for the day
