Steering cable 1996 sport nautique

local nautique dealer is telling my I need a Nautique cable S2205 19.5 which is 400$ which is fine but I’m finding similar cables for 125$ on Amazon . Likely chance they won’t work but anyone out there found a match part that would be more cost efficient ? I have the factory helm in place which in turn requires the more expensive cable . Other option is to replace the helm and the new cable is cheaper which puts me over 400 for the whole repair . For long term purposes would
b smart if I ever have to replace the cable again . Any suggestions out there

No way I'd put a knockoff steering cable in a Nautique. Are they quoting you $400 for just the cable, or for parts and installation? Depending on the boat, it can be a fairly labor intensive replacement.

It's not a knockoff cable Charles it's just up dated,good chance your boat already is using one. I believe SeaStar changed the size of the rack,at least the racks mounting points are wider on the new one so it will not fit the old assembly If you have an adjustable wheel you only need to change the bottom half,then you will always be able to use the new less expensive cable.Until they decide to change it again. As time goes on I'd guess the old cables will only get more expensive since less of them will be sold. I changed mine out in '14 to the new style, Zach at the time still being at N3 suggested to go with the new one,price back then was the same either way. But now when it goes bad I can use the less expensive one.

Yea that’s exactly what I’m saying but what I’m wondering if there’s a cheaper route to take for just a cable 400$ seems quite steep for an old style cable . Without having to upgrade my helm is there a more cost efficient route to take . 400$ installed would be fair but just the part before shipping is gonna hurt the wallet . But if that’s what it costs so be it . But if there’s a different option I’m sure someone some where would have discovered it .

Direct CC replacement (OEM) is $319 (www.nautiqueparts.com). The "direct replacement" is $195. IMO, the direct replacement is every bit a good as the OEM.

I have to agree with JQ, I ran the direct replacement cable in my Sport for 3 years up until I sold the boat it was still butter smooth. I see absolutely no reason to spend the extra money on the "genuine cable" which I'm pretty sure was manufactured by Teleflex as well.

The OEM cable from Nautique parts used to have an extra 4” of ‘throw’. I think if you converted to the new style helm you can use the standard teleflex cable but the old ones were definitely unique.

Still a gray area here guys . Do the cheaper cables have enough throw for this boat and having not updated my helm do these cheaper cables fit? If so where do I order this from ?

I didn't have any throw / turing issues with mine on the old helm. You can get the Teleflex from the link above at Nautique Parts, don't forget to use your PN discount!

After I had ordered mine, my local dealer also sourced another brand of cable that was even slightly cheaper that they claimed to be just as good as the original. I don't remember the brand though.

HI, I'm a newbie here and also in the uk, I am also having Teleflex steering cable prolems, the number on my 1997 196 cable is ssc15479, none of the uk dealers can recognise this number, It seems to be the 7 that's wrong can anybody help with this. If i could find a contact for Teleflex i would ask them but no luck there.

Ok, sorry Guys but just found the answer on CCF the 7 denotes a half foot on the length, why the dumb UK Teleflex dealers could not tell me that is beyond me.
