Winterize/Oil Recommendations for a newbie

Shell's website sucks, you have to do a google search to find the pdf. I like the Valvoline VR1 for the GT40.

This T4 Rotella, is the oil I have been using in my ZR409 along with Motorcraft FL-1A filter. I change every 40-50hrs since I do it myself, its cheap protection and only takes 30mins.
You can buy both from Wal-Mart....

Thank You everyone that responded. I changed the oil over the weekend and started to winterize last night. I removed 5 plugs and the manual states I should have a tranny plug. I could not find the plug nor a hose to disconnect to drain. Do I have a plug or drain line in a direct drive? I was planning on running anti-freeze through as the motor was warm last night. I was unable to as I could not figure out the tranny plug. Is it best to remove the thermostat and pour in at this point?

Your missing at least one plug, there should be (2) at the manifolds, (1) at the trans cooler, (1) at the J-Tube, (2) at the block - a knock sensor on the starboard side and a plug on the port side. If you have a heater you need to remove the manifold (high) side hose to it, if you have a shower it likely is connected to the block port side.

Tranny plug you referenced is likely the trans cooler which is just below the port side motor mount.

The TStat open or closed does not matter after a drain, so you can do a suck up or pour in, either will be fine. Motor does not need to be warm for either.

I did the maniforlds, j-tube, 2 blocks with sensors. I will look again this evening to find the trans cooler plug. I do not have a heater or shower.

Gotcha, you must have knock sensors both sides, do not use teflon on those and they only need to be tightened snug, like 20ft/ls iirc. Be gentle with the trans cooler, somewhat thin soft material so easy to damage.

I just looked online and found a picture of the trans cooler and know exactly where it is. When I was going through the pcm manual it made it sound like it was the tranny itself that I had to drain. I am starting to wonder if they were referring to the v-drive.

Before your backfill pull the impeller also, should get a bit of water out from that. When you are all done be sure and empty the strainer of any water or anti freeze.

Ok. Do you suggest turning the motor off as soon as anti freeze comes out the back? I purchased 5 gallons and plan on sucking it up.

Righty Tighty Lefty Lucy. They can be tight, just spin accordingly, be sure and not lose the rubber gasket.
