Winterize/Oil Recommendations for a newbie

Hello,

Going to change the oil and winterize the boat this weekend. I need some help on engine oil. It calls for SAE 15w 40 with API SJ. Is this something I can just pickup at the auto parts store or do I need to go to a marina?

The oil filter is a Motorcraft FL-1A or Fram PH-8A. Either can be found at any auto parts store. I'm not suggesting that those 2 filters are the best to choose from, but they are the correct part number. If you want a better oil filter the auto parts store can cross reference the part number of a better filter off of either of the 2 filters I mentioned above.

K&N, Purolator Pure One, Mobil, Napa Gold, and Royal Purple are all good filters and better than the 2 I mentioned above. I just don't know the part number for those brands.

I agree with Charles on the oil. Shell Rotella T 15w40 is the way to go. This is the oil that was recommended by PCM to a fellow PN member (can't remember who though).

If you take the oil filter part number provided above to your local auto parts store, they can cross reference a filter for you there vs ordering from Nautique Parts

Charles linked to T5 which is a synthetic blend, T4 is the conventional oil which does have the API SJ rating. It used to be T3, not sure what the differences are, but as far as I know, the T4 is still okay.

It is. There's no real advantage to running a synthetic blend in these boats. Some people really like the idea of a synthetic and it isn't much more expensive so that's why I linked it.

If it matters to you, the Rotella (conventional T4 or blend T5), no longer carries the gas engine designations (SJ, SM, or SN). A couple other 15W-40 options that do carry one gas designation or another include Chevron Delo 400 and Valvoline Premium Blue.

A couple more cross-references for filters that match up with the Motorcraft FL-1A and Fram PH-8A include Sierra 18-7875, Wix 51515, and AC Delco PF-2. I think I have the Wix in right now which was pretty easy to find at a local store. I'm not a fan of Fram, so avoid them when I can.

As compared to other filters bashing FRAM may in general have some merit. In other words, I understand there are in fact differences between filter brands.

However, honestly, if you follow the oil change schedule I don't think it matters what filter you use. I am content to use the FRAM brand and stand behind using it.

They sell a lot of them in a free market economy because the quality vs. cost equation makes sense.

I think you got me, I checked the specification sheet online for T4, but now double checked and seen a new one dated 1/16/17. The new T4 is still rated for gas engines (API SN designation.) I don't know if there is anything in the SJ designation and not in the SN that is absolutely vital. I'm not going to worry about it, but if you know anymore about it please fill me in.


The new T5 does not have an API designation for gasoline.

Interesting, the last time I looked at the back of a new bottle earlier this summer, it didn't have any of the gas engine codes that the T3 had. Their website doesn't mention it either which is where I was looking to verify. I personally wouldn't have any issue putting in the new T4, but I have an older engine and the zinc levels are still high enough for my flat tappet.
