    Water Pump

The water pump on my 1999 GT40 is dripping out of the weep hole slowly. I want to fix it and also replace the impeller.
    1. How do I fix the leak? Is it a seal that can be replaced or will the pump have to be rebuilt?
    2. How many seals are there on the impeller housing? I have an impeller from DIM with an O-ring. Do I need a gasket also?

Also-the pump pulley is not parrallel with the belt exactly. It is slightly at a small angle. Is this normal?

    RE: Water Pump

The circulating pump will last a little longer even if it is dripping, but that is the first sign that it's on it's way out. They are relatively inexpensive (~150 bucks), I bet skidim stocks them. I could not tell you if it could be rebuilt or not. Personally I would get a new one and replace the ailing one.

The impeller should have only one seal under the cover plate that you open up to remove the impeller. My impeller came with an oring and a paper gasket that was kind of hidden in the packaging. My engine is an excalibur and the raw water pump is a sherwood. Just take the raw water pump off, and pay attention to how things came apart and put it back together exactly the same way. Use some dish detergent to aid in getting the new impeller in there. I used plumbers silicone grease for mine, and that silicone grease is good for o-rings too, you can get it the plumbing section of home depot or lowes, just make sure it's silicone grease, not caulk or sealant.

The pump could be at a very slight angle and obviously parallel is perfect. When you pull the raw water pump, check it for wobble or play about the shaft. It should not have any. If it does, then you probably need to rebuild it, and they do make rebuild kits with seals and bearings. Skidim has them as well. If the belt is wearing funny due to the slight misalignment you will see belt dust on the pullies. My alternator belt was a bit loose and there was dust in there from it jumping up and down. I tightened it up and it stopped.

Good luck. you may also want to call SKIDIM direct and talk to them about the circulating pump, those guys are pretty darn helpful.

      If it's a Sherwood Pump.....

If it is a Sherwood pump, it has a mechanical shaft seal. If the shaft seal is leaking it should be replaced. The mechanical shaft seal will cost about $42. Go to page 32 of the attached manual for the breakdown of a standard pump seal. Refer to page 39 for preventative maintenance information (when to replace seals, etc).

After I had removed my pump to replace the impellor, it took about 20 extra minutes to replace the mechnical seal.

Where do I purchase the mechanical shaft seal?

          RE: If it

I bought mine thru my local dealer. If you don't have a local dealer, call Midwest Correct Craft In Indiana @ (260) 833-2226. If you have technical questions, ask to talk to Jeff in the technical department. He was very helpful with my alternator problem.

I just changed my impeller on my 2019 G23 H6 and found the impeller housing has a hole in the bottom of the housing. Under pressure from the hose the hole allowed water to seep out but once I started the motor it seemed to stop. Does anyone know what would cause that and is it normal?

Pictures are always helpful and everyone has a phone these days.....

To be clear are you saying the raw water impeller housing has a hole in it or the water pump on the engine? I personally have never worked on a raw water pump that had a hole that was designed into the pump housing. The water pump on the engine, yes. You typically will get water out of that hole if the bearing has gone bad.

Maybe that is a design feature on the new closed cooling boats but I've never seen a hole in a standard raw water pump. I would really need to see pictures of what you're referencing to be more helpful.

This would be the engine circulation pump. The weep hole is circled in the picture below. If you have water coming out of here the bearing is perished. Could could replace the bearing but most people replace the entire pump.....
