Locker lids, what are they made out of?

Hi all, my sun deck needs some new vinyl and I'm contemplating making a walk through. So I'll need to make new rear locker lids. Can anyone tell me what the bases are made of? Hdpe maybe? I'd like to trial the project prior to taking a knife to my current ones.

The hatches on my '08 230 are a version of HDPE. They are not as dense as a sheet of HDPE one would pick up from a plastics supplier, I would say they're version of "Starboard." CC/Nautique uses a layer of aluminum wherever screws for hinges go so the screws have something solid to hold onto. The walk through in our 230 is fiberglass if that helps any...

        aZ,
If anyone on here can make this modification it is you, especially after your recent speaker/ cup holder mods. I am anxiously awaiting to see how it comes out.

Thanks guys I will do some research on starboard. Interesting about the layer of al as HDPE is notoriously hard to bond to.

Thanks paxdad. I was also going to ask for some opinions on weather or not it may affect resale, although I have no intentions of selling, it's always in the back of my mind. If it's not going to be as good as if it were factory then I'll can the idea at inception.

The worry I have is that the walk through won't be nice and deep like you see on the 230 or indeed the new sans, although other brands (bu, centurion) do have a narrow shallow walk through that looks ok, but functionality suffers greatly, however only because they are narrow, not because they are shallow.

So here's my plan, spin the stainless catches on the engine dividers around so they are on the engine side of the divider rather than the locker side. Make new hatches that are wider than standard and reuse the factory latch mechanism but obviously now they are ~120mm closer to the centre of the boat. This should give me a walk through around 500mm wide. Due to the water drain that runs around the inside of that whole area I need to keep the engine hatch/walk through above that, this will put the height of the walk through roughly the same height as the fibreglass front and rear and a bit over an inch lower than the padding on the hatches beside it. Thoughts?

Ps sorry I forgot to mention boat model, I thought it was in my sig, oops. 08 210

At just an inch or 2 lower, I think it would look good and function well. Much lower and you will get the wave washing over the back when you stop and are ballasted, aka the problem Gs experience.

Yeah Vision, I don't intend to cut into the transom so that pretty much limits height. After taking a few measurements this what I've come up with:
If I use the same clearance from latch to edge as factory then the locker hatches will end up 190mm wider than factory (each side) so dropping the centre section by almost 16" giving me a 520mm (20.5") walk through. Here is a quick and rough photoshop to show proportions, before and after for reference.

              Standard 210 sundeck:

              Proposed sundeck with walk though:

I chose a later model as I would probably trim the hatches like this rather than the older curve.

Another thing I notices was the new 200V actually has a very shallow but still wide walkthrough and that looks good.

That seems like a ton of work just for a 4" narrower look, since functionally everything under the the covers will still be the same. You would also have to retain the hinges and either run your center hatch under the edges of your side covers to keep it locked down or reuse the original lock or something similar. Why not reuse the panels and on the center one finish the center strip of it for Seadeck and then have 4ish inches of vinyl done for the edges? Similar look and less re-work and a new owner could still have it re-skinned without a ton of work.

Also excellent choice on the boat for the mock-up I didn't realize the front carpet had that read logo in it since I never see mine.

Jonsquatch, I realise that it is a fair bit of extra work, but like I said earlier, if it's not going to look like it came from factory then I won't even bother and to me putting a strip down the middle of the engine hatch looks a bit half assed, as does replacing the centre section with seadek. I intend to re use the latch mechanism for the centre section, sorry I left that out of the photoshop.
I have also decided that if I go ahead with this I will probably keep all 3 hatches in tact so the project could be reversed if ever desired.

For anyone who finds this thread in the future, the product I have been recommended is starboard XL. If the project goes ahead I will start a new thread in the DIY section.
                        Thanks all.
