    Battery Issues 2012 210 SANTE

    Afternoon all,

What are the odds of BOTH one year old 2012 SANTE 210 batteries going out over winter storage?

The boat was stored inside, the switch was set to off and she started up just fine at the end of last season ... Something seems fishy. Any insights?

They have been on a charger for the last couple days and they wont take a charge according to the dealership.

Thank you in advance for any info you have!

    not entirely an abnormal situation.

Did you have an onboard charger on your boat to keep them charged and conditioned? use it constantly when the boat is not in use?

Depending on what brand battery you had in there... how you used them, how heavily you depleted them and how often, maintained them, kept them charged...2-3 yrs lifespan is what you will often see on a lot of batteries unless you go to premium brands.

If you dont have an onboard charger... recommend you look in to putting one on your boat and keeping in plugged in when you are not on the water.... or, just continue as you are now and plan on replacement every 2-4yrs.

I didn't get much love on this question, so I thought I might provide some more information.

The batteries were DEKA 24M7's Of course the warranty is gone on them. I guess I am just kinda pissed I only got one year out of them ... I was told they are sealed batteries, so it doesn't have to do with the water in them? I don't know much about batteries, and it seems like everyone else I have talked to doesn't either. No good explanation from Nautique or my dealer as to why they would go out after one year.

The next question is ... what to replace them with. Any suggestions?

Weird, Deka is money and my favorite marine choice. My boat sits in cold or warm storage all winter and always fires right up in the spring(not a Deka at this time). They won't recharge?

interstate makes a nice 'marine' battery...

battery tender over the winter will help with the life of the battery.

I've been reading up a whole bunch on batteries the past few days, and even posted a thread here [ http://www.planetnautique.com/vb3/sh...t-of-a-battery ] about only getting 2-3 years out of my batteries. By no means am I a battery expert, but from what I've gathered from this forum and a bunch of google searching:
Bottom line, is make sure they are charged when you put the boat away for winter (chances are they weren't fully charged with all the current draws on our Nautiques from stereos, pumps, blowers, bilge pumps, etc.).
I've even read that lots of car batteries go around uncharged most of the week with our habits of driving 10-15 minutes with lights, radio, nav systems, seat warmers, etc., and some battery companies are now recommending "deep cycle" batteries vs cranking batteries for cars.
Keep them charged throughout the winter (either 1x/month or something like a battery tender); Some articles even recommend putting the battery in a slight discharge cycle every 30 days for ~3 hours.
If the battery has an extremely low charge (ie: <7 volts), I've read that you can hook a battery up in paralell with a known good 12v battery & then start charging it to trick the charger into charging your battery (some won't charge severely discharged batteries). If it has a 10.5V+ charge, and won't keep a charge, you've likely got a dead battery.
You should at least by an AGM battery for your boat (not a traditional auto cranking), and several sources seem to recommend getting a deep cycle (but not a GEL) for modern ski & wake boats.
There also seems to be a growing trend of putting permanent battery chargers in ski/wake boats & letting them charge all week year-round. (It seems the cost of one of these chargers will pay for itself in 1-2 years with the rate that some of us replace batteries).

I have saved tons of batteries with the parallel charging trick.

Yea man. Every review I have read on them are positive (punn intended) but these went tits up over the winter. Apparently they have been on the charger for a few days and are only giving off 50 cca's.

Awesome write-up. Thanks for the info. If I get the bats back I will try the parallel trick. Thank you!

What about onboard battery chargers? Anyone have experience with noco? Specifically the genm2 charger?

What about solar battery tenders? Do they work? Where I store, there is no power available for battery tenders.

You are going to want a 2 bank system if you have dual batteries. I think you might be able to wire a single bank system to your Perko switch and treat both batteries as one big battery but that is not the best idea for battery health. Or you could also isolate it and charge one battery at a time which would be ok but one more thing to swtich around. The best solution would be a 2 bank charger. I believe this is what the factory uses:

Yea. It isn't on there. Unless I missed it, which I doubt. Should it have been?

Ummmm unless I am incorrect back in 2012 that was standard on all team boats receiving the dual battery set up. I will have to check that year and I will hit you back.
