What is the advantage of a closed water cooling system? If you are using the boat in a fresh water lake? plus doesn't the boat still suck up water to cool the muffler?

I have the ZR6 in my SV211 so mine came with the closed loop cooling. I ordered my previous boat, a Mastercraft 210 VRS, with the closed loop cooling system. The manifolds are still raw water cooled. The boat still needs to be winterized in cold climates to prevent the manifolds, engine heat exchanger and transmission cooler from rupturing due to freeze up. Since the engine block is antifreeze protected there is less worry about damage to it. The running engine temperatures are supposedly more stable therefore the life expectancy should be longer. I don't worry about running in brackish or salty raw water but I still fresh water flush it after each use. Mine has the heater (in the closed loop) so once it warms up the heater temperatures are constant. I think the engine block water pump tends to last longer because it doesn't have suspended particulate being circulated through the motor and because the engine block is in a closed loop you don't run the risk of solids buildup in the circulating passages. If proper maintenance is done by keeping the system in good operating condition with periodic renewed antifreeze you should never have to worry about rust buildup in the block. The exhaust manifolds in either open or closed loop systems need to be pulled off about every three to four years and cleaned out. I don't mind running anywhere, even in 100% salt water, because I know the engine is antifreeze protected. I think the more stable temperatures is why PCM puts the closed loop system on the ZR6 since it has aluminum heads. The heat exchanger doesn't take up that much additional space. It is about 8 inches in diameter and about 18 inches long and is fitted close to the pylon on the motor in the V drives. Since it offers these benefits, boats with it have higher resale value.
