I managed to trace the routes of everything.
water intake - raw water pump - vdrive heat exchange - trans heat exchange - tstat

Does it matter which direction the water flows through the vdrive heat exchange?

I'm not sure about that... Mine goes from starboard to port. I'm not sure if it or the transmission heat exchanger have a direction or not. I've never noticed an arrow indicating as such.

It's so strange that someone would have removed the strainer. I wonder if they had a problem with it leaking air and instead of repairing/replacing it they just removed it.

That is my guess. New ones don't cost much, can't imagine why it would not have been replaced. The hose to finish the connections is going to cost more than the strainer.

          Core-rider,
Can you look at your boat to verify routing of hoses. The water intake is nearly directly below the strainer. The hose will need to make a very sharp 90 turn vertical to clear the engine mount and reach the strainer. The hose does not want to make this bend. I have 20' of new hose that needs to be cut correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

          Thanks

I also noticed they left out the drain plug on the transmission heat exchanger for their drain locations.

          The routing should be:
          Raw water intake
          Strainer
          Transmission heat exchanger
          Raw water pump
          V-drive heat exchanger
          Larger hose on tstat housing
          Engine water pump
Engine block ---> Heads ---> Intake
          Smaller hoses on tstat housing
          Exhaust manifolds ---> Risers
          Exhaust

Mine has a 90* fitting that turns toward the bow, then the shutoff valve, then another 90* fitting to the starboard, then hose connects and makes a 90* turn back to the stern above the v-drive mount. It then turns up toward the strainer.

That was quick!!! And there is my problem. Some A#$ replaced that 90 bend with a straight plastic piece. Thanks for the help. Now I have to find a brass 90. I thought that plastic piece looked suspect.

Looks like the raw water intake is different between the 2002 & 2003. My intake points towards the stern and the handle for the valve is mounted to the aluminum frame to ease access. However, the plastic straight connection is just wrong. A 90 connection would point straight up to the strainer.

Yeah, plastic is NEVER a good idea on a thru-hull fitting!

They did your handle like the ballast valves on mine with the extension. Get rid of the plastic. You might get lucky a find the 90* fitting you need at Lowe's, Home Depot, or maybe a plumbing supply store. If not West Marine or some other marine supply store should have them.

                        Two updates on my progress.
Based on discussions and help from Core-Rider, I determined the PO replaced the brass 90 degree fitting on the raw water intake with a straight plastic piece. The valve body on the raw water intake has a 1" pipe thread. All the hoses are 1.25". This means I need a 90 degree fitting with male 1" pipe thread (NPT) and 1.25" hose barb. $196!!!! (never checked with Nautique dealer, probably should have). After some research, the hose supply guy provided a 90 degree 1" NPT male to female and a 1" NPT to 1.25" hose straight fitting. $36. Much better. All these parts fit together as planned.

I still needed a strainer. Nautiqueparts has a strainer and hose barbs listed. The strainer does not have the mounting bracket, so I ordered a 1.25" strainer from West Marine that included a bracket and two straight hose barbs. I suspected I needed a 90 degree hose barb for one side of the strainer, so I ordered this from Nautiqueparts. The Nautiqueparts order showed within about three days. The West Marine order took 9 days (there is a a store 20 miles from me, should have drove there). Last night I went to finish the assembly of said parts, but ran into another issue. The hose barbs from Nautiqueparts are 1" with 1" NPT (should have read the description better.) They won't work with the hose or the strainer. Back to the industrial hose supplier to get the correct size parts. Planning to get a 1.25" NPT 90 male to female. This will allow me to use the straight hose barb that came with the strainer.
