    Engine Cleanup

I was doing some spring cleaning on my boat, and I'm to the engine compartment now. When I bought the boat last fall, there was quite a bit of oil in the compartment, I almost walked away from the deal but the people that owned it said that if there was a problem with the engine that they would pay for any repairs, and they put it on the bill of sale as well. Anyways, back to my question there is a bunch of clean oil and I'm thinking it was from the winterizing oil change that they did before I bought it. Will spraying degreaser in the engine compartment and pressure washing it hurt anything in the compartment? I was thinking of using something like Simple Green Degreaser. Thoughts?

Wipe up loose oil with a rag.
Use mineral spirits, or paint thinner, to help dissolve any "gunk"
I would use Tide laundry detergent., dissolved in warm or hot water.
Pressure washing is OK, obviously do not pressure wash the distributor, any electronics, things like that.

Go to the auto parts store and get a gallon of purple cleaner. It will clean up the oil and wash out with water. Be careful it is very strong dont let it dry on anything and use in a well vented area. Not for vinyl.

Will the Tide leave a residue behind?

If the Tide leaves a residue, it will just dissolve in water the next time your bilge gets wet, and further clean the bilge. Your clothes probably have laundry residue on them.

I remember my dad using powered tide and a broom to clean our driveway.

I'm still just throwing a bar of Lava soap in the bilge at the beginning of the season.

Dawn soap breaks up grease. We used to carry it on our ambulances to dissolve pepper spray...

do you really just throw a bar of lava soap in the bilge and leave it in there for the year?what is exactly does that do? it sounds like a good idea.

Note that any soap that goes into the lake promotes the growth of the lake weeds.
We avoid soaps going into our private lake. The HOA promotes fertilizers and laundry soaps that don't have potassium and maybe other ingredients.
The water from the modern septic tank eventually makes it to the lakes....so all the soap from the homes goes to the lake...eventually.

I do, it doesn't last long but it does move around enough to clean it. It's an old cruiser trick I learned when the boats I owned didn't have drain plugs.

My wife thinks I'm crazy. The first thing I do when we get a boat is spend hours cleaning the bilge and engine. Not sure why people don't keep these clean! The bilge is a light color so that you can see any leaks or engine issues. Anyway my dad always used tide or whisk in his cruiser and it works well. Put the plug in and put a few gallons of water in and some detergent grab a dish brush and get after it. No need for a pressure washer. They just spray all that oil and gunk all over the interior. Oh yeah rinse lather repeat!
