    Result of overheating on muffler.

2010 CB 200, PCM ZR 409 non Catanium..

Recently my engine temp shot up; I was close to the dock so limped back. I changed the impeller and took the boat out for a test; lost the second impeller. Third time I changed the impeller but also took apart the entire water circulation system and found bits and pieces of the previous two impellers. I also noticed a bit of what looked like carbon buildup in the impeller housing so I used a soft cloth to polish it. This time I took the boat out and operating temp was back to normal and has remained that way.

However, there was some damage to the rubber piping that leads out of the exhaust manifold and into the muffler. They melted and become very think and frail so I changed them. I changed the one piece coming out of the muffler as well but now I'm almost certain that the engine decibels are higher than before when the boat is moving. Everything just seems a bit louder and the loudness is amplified when I'm moving at trolling speeds (like when slowing down for a big wave).

Do mufflers get damaged by excess heat? If so, is there a fix or would it need to be replaced?

It shouldn't, but I guess it would be possible to melt one. There really isn't that much in them, they trap water and then make the exhaust push it out which quiets the sound. Having the inside of the exhaust hose separating was probably causing a similar effect and now that it's changed your noticing the difference.

Does anyone know if there is an upgrade for the stock muffler?
