I just had my '97 Ski Nautique in for the yearly service. One of the main things that I needed addressed was what I would describe as a mis-fire. Around 2500-3000 rpm under load, the boat would seem to cut-out as if a cylinder was not firing or there was a problem with fuel delivery. The authorized repair facility that I took the boat to told me that is was the the fuel filter and pump that needed to be cleaned out and this is the thing that can happen when the new gasoline with 10% ethanol is used. He said that those parts were cleaned or replaced and that an enzyme additive was put in the fuel to make sure it did not separate. After a bunch of nickle-and-dime stuff (some on my end and some on theirs), I was $1200 lighter in the wallet. Got the boat back to the lake (2 hour drive), put the boat in water and immediately when I started to get up on plane, the mis-fire started again. In addition to that, the boat started to over-heat about 5 minutes later! After a conversation with the mechanic, they agreed to come pick the boat up and take it back to their facility and water test the boat this time (another $100 fee) and find out what the problem is. Got the call today that the distributor was the problem of the misfire and the part is $580! Now I am going to have to drop another $800 for something that they told me was already working properly.
My question is, does $580 seem quite a bit high for a distributor? I don't mind paying a fair price for parts and a small mark-up, but that seems kind of crazy. Maybe there is something super special about the distributor that goes in a Nautique. I would love to hear your comments.
