Anybody know what size of shaft seal packing should be used on a 2002 196? (1/4" or 3/16"?). And what is the best type of product to use - standard flax rope or the newer gore tex product?

RE: Shaft seal packing - what size and what type for 2002 -
I would go with the gore-tex. Have used it in a couple boats, and am really happy with it. Not sure on the size, but check your rudder also, they may or may not be the same size as the shaft packing. I have two different sizes in one of our boats.the WakeSlayer

I was just searching for this exact info for my 2002 196. Seems there was a change in 2002 based on info from www.skidim.com site. I'd bet it is 50-50 chance of having either size. Is there a way to measure the packing nut to determine packing size? I'd rather not tear it apart to look without having the proper replacement size on hand.

I also looked at skidim and the wording is confusing - it says nautiques up to 2002 and then after 2002 but leaves you hanging as to what size of shaft seal a 2002 requires. I'm going to guess it is 1/4" because 2002 was the first year for the total surface contral hull???

Go with the gore tex. I just replaced the packing in my 2002 196. It was 1/4. Talked with SkiDim and they said 2002 actually had both sizes. I ordered both sizes just to be safe. It was cheap insurance. The toughest part of the job was getting a good pick to dig the old packing out.

in order to accurately measure, you would pretty much need the nut off. You can tell what you need once you have pulled the old stuff out, but then you are stuck for a couple days.
Lastly, does it even need to be repacked? Try just tightening a little. Just a hair past hand tight is what you want. Anywhere from 4-10 drips per minute and you are fine. The nut/gland should remain right around water temp, if adjusted properly.the WakeSlayer

good info in this thread, but am posting again for a final answer ... or at least a final good guessthe gfo gore-tex on skidim prescribes 3/16 up till 2002, then 1/4 for anything after that (which would include my 03). however, it also says that 3/16 is typically used on 1-1/8" shafts, which is what i thought my shaft diameter is ? so, if my shaft is 1 & 1/8" would it need the 3/16 or 1/4 ?? anyones insight would be appreciated

Gonna resurrect an old thread. I am replacing the packing on my 02. I got the right size down but does anyone know if I need to have more than 2 wraps? That is all I could tell I pulled out of the old packing.
