    SHoul I Buy it

I am looking at a 91 Ski Nautique with 965hrs, the engine and transmission are original and never rebuilt. How many hrs can I expect on these before I will have to rebuild them, or before they break??

    Thanks,

    Fram

depends completely on how the person maintained the boat.

If they changed the oil every 50 hours, plugs every season, impellar every 50 hours, trans fluid every 75-100hrs, cap and rotor regularly, then it could last up to 2000 hours.

Also those 950 hrs could have been spent slowly touring the lake or they could have been spent beating the crap out of it.

Do a compression test on all 8 cyls. And take it for a test drive. If it runs good then go for it with the expectation that anything could happen once you own it. Could last a day, could last another 20 years!

      previous owner

the previous owner had the boat for 15 years, his son used it for the past 10 yrs with his buddies for skiing and wakeboarding. the boat was serviced by a marina in the beginning and end of the season. the boat is in good cond 7.5 out o f 10 appears to have been cared for.

I am assuming it will need a tune up, impellar, waterpump, fuel pump and fuel filter, so theres $300 in parts to start with. I just don;t know what to expect for the life expectancy of the transmission, thats $1000.00 - $1500.00.

      HHHHMMMMM, decisions decisions

      Thanks again,

      Fran

What is your budget for this purchase? It could be that you are overlooking better opportunities. Just my 2 cents.

          Budget

I am trying to stay at or below 8000, the boat is 4000, but I don't want to buy something that in in need of a complete rebuild. I want to play on the water with the kids.

I am still looking if anyone knows of anything in my area, western Massachusetts

          Thank You,

          Fran

PCM says 2000-2400 hours before rebuild. The Tranny should be the same. Look at the Tranny fluid does it look or smell burnt? Check for corrosion around the risers. Has it been used alot in Salt water? If not and the compression looks good I think it will be a good deal

              RE: Budget

The tranny should last forever as long as the fluid is checked and changed regularly. Do a compression check on each cylinder. That will give you a good idea of what kind of internal wear has taken place and how soon you might be looking at a rebuild.
