    Freeze Plug popped

Have a 93 Ski Nautique with a GT-40 with about 600 hours. Today while heading out, one of the freeze plugs popped out. The plug actually looks fine. The block looks okay too, but certainly a bit rusty inside. Can I just put this plug back with epoxy? If so, any recommendations or helpful tips?

    RE: Freeze Plug popped

I would simply find a socket or similar round tool and pop it back in place. Being cast iron, the block will be rusty, but that is normal.

I would not use epoxy to hold it in, that might not allow it to work as it is supposed to nad you could end up with a cracked block.

they are only a press fit...you might invest in a new plug...they are only about a dollar for steel or four or five for brass.

If a metal plug won't stay in...you can use the rubber expanding type.

I have of that happening occassionally on cars and boats. Just get a new one, smear some sealant around the edge and bang it back in with a hammer and appropriately sized socket or similiar.

FWIW, "freeze" plugs are a misnomer. The plugs are simply sealing the casting holes necessary to cast the block and do not really protect the engine against freezing.

One last question....can the plugs be bought at a typical auto parts store? I don't exactly live in inboard country here...nearest CC dealer is 3 hours away.
