Gas spurting out of tank - SAN 220 - Why?

I've been lugging a couple 5 gallon cans down to the dock and filling up and I had a few occasions where I would notice gas would spill out of the boat. I figured that I had accidentally just put too much. Recently took the boat down to the marina with the gas prices down a bit - didn't mind paying a little more for the convenience factor. This time, I was about 1/4 full, went down, started pumping and had an estimate on how much I needed. I was watching the gas pump and my friend yelled at me to stop and I looked down and gas started pouring out. I didn't understand because I was almost certain that I needed another 1/4. Lo' and behold when I started the boat up and looked at the gas gauge it said only 3/4 full. What gives? Is my gauge off?

Open both gas caps when you are filling ...it will vent better and wont be as easy to spill.

Yes, it's a venting issue. With these boats, you have to take it slow when filling.

I had this same problem on my 96 Super Sport, but I don't have duel gas caps. In my situation, the gas hose was slightly bent upward under the dash, so it was a gravity issue, not venting.
