Old boat delimma - Sell or Hold

I'm having a tough time making a decision here and looking for some opinions...

This last summer, I decided to take the plunge and went in on a new 211 with a good buddy of mine. The new boat is great btw and the partnership has been working out surprisingly well. Here's the problem - I still have my 94 ski that I've had for about 4 years and have a weird emotional attachment to it.

Part of the reason that I kept it in the beginning was because I wanted to see how the partnership would work out. I figured if the situation really wasn't working, I'd still have a boat to use while we tried to resolve any differences we had. Consider it a backup plan if you will. Well the partnership has been working out and I’ve only put on like 4-5 hours on the 94 since then.

Here's another variable. We've basically decided that we'll probably only keep the 211 until the warranty expires. At that time, we'll sell the boat and either go our separate ways or buy a new one. Realistically, when that happens - one or both of us will probably be looking to buy a house and will need any available funds to make that purchase so it will probably be going our separate ways.

I know that I always want to have a boat in my life. I'm thinking that my 94 is paid for and would still be a good boat to have and use when we get rid of the 211.

The year prior to the 211 purchase, I dumped tons of money into the 94. Upgraded stereo, heater, dual gel cell batteries, perfect pass, new carpet, partial upholstery redone, and the list goes on. For the going rate of the boat, I'd never really re-coup a lot of that investment. I also don't think I'd be able to buy a boat similar to mine for what I'd get for it should I decided to downgrade... Does that make sense?

So I turn to you... people with a similar passion for correct crafts and ask for advice. I'm sure many of you have toiled with this decision yourself. Should I sell or hang onto it? I’m I crazy for having trouble parting with it?

RE: Old boat delimma - Sell or Hold

To be honest, that's only a decision that you can make. I guess I don't have the same personal attachment to our boat like you do....when it's time to upgrade, the old one is gone and we'll get another. You are right in that you will not be able to recoup much of what you've put into the 94, if any at all.

Are you a skier or do you wakeboard most of the time? I'm guessing since you bought a 211 that you do both, maybe one more than the other? The 94 really isn't great for wakeboarding and if you're going to be desiring a larger wake in the future, then that isn't the boat to do it in....something to think about.

My thought is if it's sitting there and you aren't using it, then sell it and get more money out of it now rather than later.

Keep it. Just because the partnership is working today what about tomorrow. I am such an addict that if I had a week or two without a boat I would implode. PLus its paid for........ a 94 is not dropping in value at the same rate the 211 is also.

        Ernie,

I sold my 1995 SN to get my 2005 211. In many ways I still wish I had the 1995, holeshot, handling, top speed, simplicity of maintenance, etc. However the 211 is so darn versatile I would not be able to do nearly as much as I do with my 211. My typical crew is 5-6 which is perfect for the 211. If my typical crew was 3-4 I would still have my 1995. Crew size is the criteria I would use for your decision.

If you do not have to get the dough out of it, keep it. I would love to have a SN as a second boat. Have been toying with the idea of getting one in the next couple years. But, I have to pay for it.....

I suggest you hold on to the '94 since you have emotional attachment... the cash you get out of it won't justify the dissappointment you will have in parting with it

I prefer a ski and a wakeboard boat.

Currently I have a '05 SV211TE and have a friends '98 Ski in the other slip at my dock.

MHayes – You actually bring up a good point and one that I laugh at myself for. I grew up a die-hard slalom skier. We used to get on a course any chance we had and free skied when we couldn’t. (BTW – my buddy still has the 86 2001 and uses it daily through the summer.) When I bought the 94, my goal was to get back out there skiing. Well, pretty much all my friends are into wakeboarding, the water conditions are never really all that great in the bay, and I’ve probably only slalomed behind the boat 10 times in 4 years. So while I consider myself a skier, I’m finally coming to the realization that wakeboarding is now my water sport.

Mikeski – My thinking when purchasing the 211 was actually somewhat opposite of your crew thinking. I was excited for the 211 because of the ballast system and that if I had a small crew, I wouldn’t have to deal with fat sacs and weighing it down. You do have a point though, the 211 is way more accommodating for 5 with stuff.

Here’s my new outlook for the 94 now (which I’ll probably flip-flop on tomorrow but that’s besides the point :???: ) – The ski brought me and my friends some of the most memorable and best times I’ve had in San Diego. By me keeping the boat on the trailer, not being used, I’m depriving the boat the opportunity to provide more good times and memories for someone else. I think what I’m going to do is let the market make the decision for me. I’ll probably list it at the upper end of the spectrum and see if anyone bites. If it sells, it sells. If not, I still have an awesome second boat.

Now to figure out what that pricing spectrum is!

Thanks for all the comments. Here’s a pic of her if you’re interested.

That's a beautiful boat. I still think you should keep it on a couple of conditions. If you can afford it and you think you will still use it at least a few hours per year. You might have a hard time finding another one like it again if you should want to in the future.

**** you guys!!! Now the decision has become much more difficult. I was kind of hoping everyone would say sell, sell, sell... apparently we're mostly on the same page.

I ditched work today and decided to take the boat out to see if that would clarify anything... it didn't; but I snapped some good pics of the cruise

                      Getting ready at the ramp

A look at Mission Beach from the Pacific

                      Sun setting

                      Dusk back in the bay

I also figured to give some context, I should probably post some pics of the new ride too. Here you go:

                      I'll keep you posted!

Oh yeah, I imagine skipping work and spending a day out on the water would certainly help convince me to sell my boat. Yellow_Flash_Colorz:
