I would recommend the standard motor unless that extra $4.5K is just pocket change for you. I've got the 330 in an 07 210 and it seems to pull really hard. I think you'll want a different prop if you're adding 2K plus pounds to your boat no matter what engine you get. And as for the 6 liter being lighter - what's so great about that? We're all adding weight to our wakeboard boats right??

I have had not had a 230/236 but have had a 06 220 and 07210 both with the 330 excal I use my boats comercially (wakeboard/ski tours) I have found the 330 to do the job perfectly with a loaded or non loaded boat although have upgraded to a different prop on both boats, I have ordered our new boat with the excal again although this year they have added a few horses.

Im curious how you determined the ZR6 to be "gas guzzling" compared to the Excalibur. I have no first hand experience, but since the ZR6 is lighter and benefits from a newer design, I would assume it to be, at the very least, equally efficient.
the zr6 is lighter because of its aluminum heads (dont think it has an aluminum block, but could be wrong). that weight difference is probably around 50 lbs or so, making it a non factor. even if it were 200 lbs, it would still be a non factor when considering it is pushing a 4k plus boat. it also has VV timing which is supposed to flatten the tq curve and may have a positive effect on fuel consumption. yet, it also has 300 more cubic centimeters to fill with fuel... so even though it may have a more modern, fuel effecient design, it also requires more fuel to operate.

my experience is based off of side to side comparisons in 06 210's and 06 220's, weighted similarly. in my opinion, there is no noticeable power diff, and certainly nothing anywhere close to justifying the $4k+ upgrade. additionally, when i had my Calabria Pro V w/ a 6.2L black scorpion, there was no noticeable difference between it and my friends Pro V with the standard 5.7L 330 HP engine. the major difference was that i spent way more in fuel. finally, i spend a lot of time on an 07 Tige w/ a 330 HP engine that jumps on plane way faster (I know different hull designs so I am comparing apples and oranges) and uses SIGNIFICANTLY less fuel than i do. he can stretch his 50 gal tank for a whole weekend, whereas mine will make it just more than a full day.

we all run 2k+ ballast over stock. the only time the boats performed worth a dang was when we put the appropriate props on them, not when we dished out mega bucks for 10 more lb/ft of torque...

last note: a good friend just bought a 236. he demoed one with the 330. and thought it was a little sluggish when he had a full crew. against my advice, he let the salesman talk him into the zr6. 2 weeks after he bought it he was back down at the dealership buying a power prop because he thought the zr6 was still sluggish...and he only runs a big crew with no additional ballast...
that tige would have a marine power 5.7L 340hp in it and yes will use WAY less gas than anyother inboard made. plus out accelerate it.

              RE: he

This thread is quite interesting. I didn't see where anybody asked the original poster what range of speeds he intends to operate the boat? This topic has been discussed several times in the past and it seems the general consensus is that there is not a great difference around wakeboarding speeds. It seems the ZR6 comes alive and shows it's power above 30+MPH.

My boat has a 330EX and I wish I would have opted for the ZR6 for one reason... barefoot one-footers. I need a solid 42MPH to do one footers and the 330EX pulls me just shy of that with my typical boat crew. If I had the ZR6 I would expect to see 44-45MPH on the top side and I would be happy doing one-footers again. I know of a few people that like to race across the lake to their favorite boarding spot running 40+MPH, they are also good candidates for the ZR6.

If you ever run in salt or water with heavy minerals, the closed water cooling of the ZR6 is also an added benefit. When you consider the cost of the closed water cooling system it brings the ZR6 upgrade down to about $2500. I also feel that the ZR6 is slightly quieter and smoother than the Excalibur.

I have not heard or read people say that they regret getting the ZR6.

Our show club uses an 05 196 with ex 330 which is identical to my 05 except that I have the ZR6. Both use factory props.

Big difference at the top with power but not necessarily speed. ZR6 can hold 42-43 with out problem where the ex 330 starts at 42 but gets pulled down. This combination is the first one that I have had that allows the driver to accelerate easily with a footer if they need more speed.

Only other place you notice the difference is big loads off the dock (multiple skiers). ZR6 requires an almost tight line whereas the ex 330 needs a coil of slack.

Never checked the fuel consumption but they appear to be around the same.

no way man, i have a buddy that has a 06 SANTE 220 with the ZR6 and it still just barely has enough gut to get going with full ballast and about 5 people, that motor without ballast or anything, well get the heck up. ive ridden in a 08 excalibur 343 on a SANTE 210 and its faster than the 330, but you are CRAZY not to upgrade that motor when getting into a 220 or above, my 2 cents

I also find this very interesting. This is the Nautique, high class version of the old p*ss on Ford..Chevy's are#1, Earnhart or Waltrip, Bud or Miller arguments we used to get in fistfights over in the Tennessee hills. BOATECH, if you are called out you gotta bring it! Even on a forum a few rungs higher on the social ladder, there's got to be limits to what a man will put up with.

Did you get rid of the 211 for a SKI or do you need to add another lift in the dock? I saw you pulling out with what looked liked a 196 or 206 on Sunday.

The wonderful people over at SAIL & SKI in San Antonio loaned me there tournament boat for two weekends while my 211 is having some warranty work done. My wife has hired a private investigator to ascertain whether I was truly loaned the 196, or if I have bought another boat without her knowledge.
My boy made two complete passes for the first time Sunday. It was a lot easier than behind the 211. 196's are for girls...the wake or lack thereof should be an embarrassment to a manly skier. Professionals should have to run the course behind a 211. That would separate the men from the mice right pronto.
