Hello - I'm sure this has been discussed in the past, but I wanted to make sure I was getting the latest info. We have a 2021 GS20 on the Boatmate trailer. We are in the process of building a new garage, in which I plan to store the boat in one of the bays. I know the marketing on the GS20 states it will fit into the standard garage door,. The current plans have the standard 9x7 garage doors. Does anyone have any specific experience with the GS20 fitting into this size door, or should I upgrade to the 9x8 door ? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you

I don't have the specs for the GS20 but I have lived with the standard 8x7 door at my current house and it's been a miserable experience. Everyone in the household has clipped the entrance at least once. If you're garage is going to be a side loader like mine expect the same experience. I park a Tahoe in mine and it's a 2 step process to load the Tahoe into the garage. I have ~6" to play with mirror to mirror so this ends up being pretty much a given that one day you'll at a minimum scuff the entrance. Height wise the 8' door was a non-starter for every one of my previous boats getting in the garage without doing some unnatural act to lower the boat.
I bought my current house as a new spec home so there was nothing I could do about it and building from scratch at the time was not in the cards due to our timeline from a job promotion relocation and kids needing to be settled for school. When I built a garage for our cottage I spec'd a 9x8 door which I believe added something like $200 to the cost and if I were doing it again I'd probably buy a 10' wide door. Incredibly cheap night and day difference upgrade. This is one of those structural upgrades that you won't be able to change later without considerable cost once the house/garage is completed and one that I always recommend to anyone I talk to that is building a house. That and no matter how deep/wide your garage is, you will always want more once you move in. Anything less than 22' deep will be disappointing once you put something like a Tahoe or any full size pickup in the garage. For that GS20 I'd want a 24' deep garage. Even with a 20' boat on a trailer with a folding tongue you're still going to need at least 3' (if not 4') of additional depth to close the door comfortably.
Here's what AI is saying about door sizes....

Get a much bigger door than you think you need, AND don't forget to make sure you have plenty of depth - ask me how I know!!

Thank you for all the replies. Definitely going w the 8' doors. 10 wide is not in the cards, but 28' deep sounds like it will be plenty. I appreciate the feedback

Your neighbors will envy you for years and will be stunned that going wider was even an option. Here in Michigan the first thing guys place as a priority is a deeper basement so it can be finished later and feel open. Next is a deeper garage and lastly larger doors.
