    Anchor size/type

Hi all, the club I am joining mandate you have an anchor on board and it’s good practice of course. My question……for fresh water use what type and weight anchor do I need for my G23.

    thank in advance

Depends on what and where you use it. Small lake, calm water, sand bottom I would go with either a small box or Fortress anchor with 3' of stainless steel chain and twice the depth of the intended area you plan to use the anchor in 1/2" line.

If you're anchoring in the Great Lakes or a large open body of water, then I would go with the CG recommendations for the size/weight and depth of the waters you will be boating.

With my little 200 Sport Nautique I have both of the above with 20' of line and 3' of stainless steel chain which is probably overkill for the inland lake I boat in. I do however boat on Lake Erie as well which is a whole other beast. When I'm out there I also carry 50' of 1/2" line that I can quickly swap out when needed.

There were some recent discussions on anchors in this thread: https://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...der-and-anchor

I would highly recommend looking at a box anchor. They hold great, and fold up nicely when not in use, which makes them easy to store. When it comes to chain, I would personally use at least 8’ but maybe 10’. Chain is key to keeping any anchor at the appropriate angle while in use. 8-10’ would provide adequate weight to keep the anchor lying flat. Lastly, if you do a lot of anchoring then backing up to a beach, you absolutely need the “anchor buddy” spring loaded line. They work amazingly!

To be honest, I don't imagine using the boat away from the lake and neither do I imagine mooring in the lake, it is just that it is a mandatory requirement to have a suitable one on board as part of club rules

That being the case….I’d just get a cheap anchor kit from SeaChoice.

bturner Hit the nail on the head, "Depends on what and where you use it.". On my home lake in Virginia on Smith Mountain Lake, a box anchor is probably the worst type of anchor to use since so much of the lake bottom is covered with underwater trees which have been in place since the lake was filled and formed in the 1960s.. I have used a Greenfield River Anchor with great success over the years at SML for the reason stated above.
