Thoughts on buying this 2005 Air Nautique 205 for $15k4

I'm in the market for my first boat. I'm a mechanical engineer and have wrenched on cars and machinery my whole life, but never boats. My wife however grew up on boats and was a waterski instructor, but is not technical at all. We're looking for our first family boat (we have a 6 year old). I just want an all rounder that can hang out on the water, ski, wakeboard, and that I can sell in a few years with as little net cost of ownership as possible. I'm in Seattle by the way, and boats are more expensive here than most of the country so I've expanded my search to a 6 hour drive.

Anyways, I found this. It's a 2005 Air Nautique 205 with 746 hours on the original engine. He's asking $16,800, but when prodded a bit said I could tow it home for $15k and he'd throw in a bunch of ropes, jackets, skis, wakeboard, etc. He ran a non-profit that taught disabled kids how to ski. He knows boats in and out, has done complete engine rebuilds himself (not on this), and claims it's extremely well-maintained mechanically.

This boat is out in the middle of nowhere. For reference, the closest comp I could find in Seattle is at a dealer and is a 2002 Air Nautique with 600 hours and they're asking $23k

He said several times not to expect a beauty queen and that he'd rate the condition a 6 or 7 out of 10. About half has been reupholstered but it's not perfect. Then there is the issue of the gauges. He said the fuel gauge and oil pressure gauge don't work. I hope that means the gateway is still ok, otherwise that's a $1300 conversion to analog gauges. But I'm hoping I could replace the stepper motor on the gauges and see if they work (I'm very comfortable with soldering and this type of electrical work). I'm also planning to winterize, de-winterize, replace impellers, oil changes etc myself.

In the end, we want to give the boating lifestyle a go, but I would like to be able to sell the boat in a few years and not lose much money if possible. I'd love to get your input on whether this is a deal worth considering or not, and what else to look out for with this year/model. Thanks ahead of time!

If that boat was closer to me, I would jump on it if you decided it wasn't for you.

That is a great price for a 206. And, by the way, it is a 206, not a 205. Nautique never made a 205.

That engine has plenty of life left in it with only 750 hours. The interior doesn't look bad, and the gelcoat can be buffed back without too much work. Overall. it looks like a good deal to me at $15,000.

In his description, he says it needs new gauges. That's not accurate. I am 99% sure that boat will need a gateway bypass, not just new gauges.

If he's willing to deal, offer him $13,500 and see if he bites. If he does, that's even better!

205 was a typo. Yeah, I've read up on the conversion and called ski-them-again.com about the conversion kit already. I was hoping it could be the stepper/capacitors, as shown here, because most of the gauges apparently do work. But I understand that it may need the full gauge conversion at a $1300 expense.

Also, I already am pushing him down on price to get to $15k. He has it listed at $16,800. Out of curiosity, if I had the gauges fixed and perhaps the boat and gelcoat cleaned up a bit, what do you think I could sell this for?

Another Seattle area 206 owner here. That's a decent deal and I like Jeff's offer price point. Clean ones in the post covid market seem to sell in the mid 20's. Skip the 2002 model boat - much less room with the different gunnel configuration and it's been for sale for some time. With some sweat equity, that 206 will clean up nicely. It's got the tourney seat (that the flip down front seat back with the wider seat - a must have). It also has the front bow insert (an option) and also appears to have front speakers (normally only on the team edition but an option as well). The tower is helpful so you can hang some gear and also tube(did I say that?)/board with riders in the back seat. It's missing the perfect pass....a bit of mystery for a ski school boat and a good negotiating point. Looks like the sideboard vinyl is tired but you can buy replacements from C&S marine. Not cheap but buy it once and it's done. Does it have a quality cover? Expect $1k for a decent sunbrella cover.

A 206 is the best 'family style option' for a tourney ski boat IMO. Nice wake and good room for a direct drive. It's not a great touring Lake Washington boat - just too low in the nose for rough water - and you have to be careful driving it to keep the nose dry. Better suited for Lake Sammamish or going east on the Columbia. Best use is skiing. You can wakeboard behind them but it's a nothing burger unless you sack them. Some have a tank in the aft locker that helps boarding a bit. There are people who say you can surf them with lots of sacks but it's a completely unnatural and unsafe act.

If you want to see a 206 in person, PM me and I'll hook you up. My boat's currently on Lake Washington at the Newport Marina in Bellevue. You and the family are welcome to check it out.

Let's be honest on re-sale. Skier's are a dying breed - everyone seems to want a 12+ passenger surf/party boat. Hardcore skiers will go for closed bow, not the 206 with a tower. A cleaned up 206 and trailer will get you low twenties for sure. Mid to upper twenties if it's exceptionally clean and decent hours - it will be hard to get to that level. There are just less buyers for ski boats so it's not as simple as it was 10 years ago pre surf fest. This is why I think Jeff's $13.5k price point is about right - you'll need to toss some upholstery $$, a gauge kit and a stargazer PP. Prolly $5k + your R&R. Trailer is a wildcard. At a low twenties sell price, that leaves you a few K for unexpected stuff.

Comparable East Coast... I just sold a 97' sport with a perfect pass for 12k had a lot of extra parts interior wasn't that good so I think 13 is great, 15 is fair .... Still waiting on the gauge conversion for my new 07' Sante ...
also figure 500-1000 in trailer maintenance seems that's the last on everyone's list
I've got 5k in upgrades 1k ballast, 2k guages and perfect pass, 3k tune up, bimini, prop, trailer, etc give you an idea
take care of it keep it stored under cover it will hold its value

Hey Ostojo, if you decide to buy that 2005 I just posted a set of Faria gauges for sale. Check the post and good luck if you start the project.

I think this sentence alone would play loudly in my decision if you think it's the right boat for you.

I like that you consider resale value, that's my thought process when I make a purchase. Always hard to know what the future holds, but I don't think you are going to get lumped up on this one.
All great input here, SilentSeven also made some real good points.
