Why the love for SeaDeck

Recently had a conversation with an acquaintance shopping for a newer boat about Seadeck and now that its been around while full tilt on boats , curious to hear eveeyone’s thoughts. I am old school. I’ve toyed around with a complete kit for my 210 but i still just cant convince myself its better than snap out carpet. Ive updated my original Sano with seadeck and any seadeck inside the cabin gets dusty , grimy and holds dirt and collects sand around the edges like crazy. Boat sits on a lift with no hose close by , so bucket of soapy water and couple of fresh ones to rinse would be needed. I did notice a lot of boats in the 5-7 yr mark with some pretty rough seadeck , and then noticed a lot of boats for sale have “ new seadeck” as a tag line on a majority of what i would consider “well maintained “ boats. I’ve had to replace few pieces on my swim deck ans one inside the cockip and its not super easy to remove the old glue . Replacement pieces weren't exactly on the cheap . On the flipside my logo carpet looks almost as clean as day one, is 10plus years old , and is a breeze to snap out and clean. Which then leaves the carpetless deck just as easy to wipe down with any spray cleaner I choose . Simple maintenance.



So what’s with all the love and seadeck being the go to option ?

I still don't have Seadek in my 210 but did purchase new carpet about 4 years ago and the middle section is now pretty matted down. REALLY matted down compared to, say the section under the rear seat. I work pretty diligently to keep it in decent shape, but it's starting to show wear. Also, we got caught in a torrential downpour a few weeks ago and carpet got soaked. I'm not completely buying the "breeze to snap out and clean" and yeah, you can chime in that I'm not as adept at carpet cleaning as others may be. It was a LOT of work trying to get the smell out of it afterwards. Being old school myself and actually liking the feel of carpet, I'd be tempted to stay the course and get new carpet if it was still readily available, but alas it is not.

As much as anything I'd say the "love" is being driven by the manufacturers. Probably similar to the fact no one puts carpet in bathrooms , carpet is no longer being installed in the new boats and it's no secret the masses for the most part want to make their boats appear new, which includes no carpet.

That's just my take, as I'm currently in the process of making the switch myself.

I was on a friend's brand new pontoon boat a few weeks ago. Whatever you imagine as a pontoon boat, clear it out of your head. The new pontoons are very fancy, full of features, etc. The price tag reflects it too. To the point...the whole deck was covered in a material that was not carpet and not like Seadeck. I thought it was possibly better because it was almost solid surface, but with texture and soft. Easy to rinse off, but who knows about longevity.

I think this flooring market has many options. We probably just only know a few key brand names.

I would prefer a plain fiberglass deck with non-slip texture like in off shore fishing boats. No carpet or Seadeck to deal with.

Cover your swim step in carpet and tell us how it does! Seadek is also nonslip so when you stand on gunwale areas like when you are getting boards out of surf pockets it’s great. It also does not get hot we boat in 110 degrees at the river so that’s important. Carpet in that heat will not last. Approaching 300 hours in our boat it’s holding up I’m going to guestimate it’s useful life at 7-8 years. It gives the boat a new modern look. I don’t agree with putting it on vertical surfaces I like the clean white gel coat look

Carpert gets mildewy, stinky, gets matted, hold moisture through the day, envelopes sand and grit needing a vacuum and steamer to truly get clean.

My kids (1, 2.5 & 4) drop snacks, fruit, soggy goldfish all over the floor. Yeah this would drive other boat owners bonkers but it keeps my kids happy while we shred. And I can hit the floor with the electric power washing with the soft nozzle and the floor is clean in 5 minutes and DRY in 30 minutes.

I haven't owned a boat with Sea Deck that was installed instead of carpet but I do have it on my walk through, my platform and transom saver. I'm hot and cold with it. It's not as easy as some are saying to clean and it's certainly not as soft as carpet. Get a little over zealous while waxing and you'll play heck getting the dried wax out of it as well.

I've owned boats with snap in carpet and really never had a problem cleaning it but then again I didn't get on my knees with a steamer either. What i did was pull the carpet out and went to the quarter car wash. I start by hanging the carpet on the floor mat clips and spray the carpet on the soap setting. This knocks out all the sand, dirt and whatever out of the carpet. I then hit it with a garden sprayer filled with a heavy mix of Downy fabric conditioner. If the carpet is matted you can use a brush on a pole to loosen the piling in the carpet. I then run the sprayer on rinse and I'm pretty much done. Throw the carpet back in the bed of the truck and put it in the sun to dry. If you're looking to freshen up the smell a bit you can throw the sprayer on the lemon wax rinse.

I've used version of this for years on boats I'm doing a light restoration on. You'd be shocked to see how this works on something like a 15 year old Ski Nautique or ProStar with glue in carpet. Pull all the seats out, the engine cover and the the center section behind the engine, then start at the helm and work your way back. The results are sometimes shocking and lemony fresh. The ladies love that lemony fresh smell.....

I am currently replacing my snap out carpet with SeaDek. The carpet gets stinky and dirty and we noticed a large part of why our neighbors 2019 with SeaDek is just plain more comfortable to hang out on is because of the flooring.

To me Seadek just feels right on my feet in a way carpet doesn’t on a boat. It’s soft but not overly soft. It looks nice, usually like some sort of wood. Wood just screams classy on a boat. Always has. Just look at the original Paragons. Seadek doesn’t last forever but neither does carpet. Seadek is a little harder to clean but it doesn’t give off odors like carpet can. And probably most importantly in my case, on my 2011 230 Seadek looks way better than the atrocious griffin carpet that came from the factory. That carpet in particular is just not attractive in any way.

I too like the snap out carpet. On the walkthrough and platform, as well as some gunnel steps i prefer the SeaDek. SANO was the worst thing they had. I actually had some that dried out so bad that it cracked and pinched skin to where someone bled once.

Soggy wet carpet is about as bad as it gets. Don’t disagree there at all.



I follow he BTurner method only at home , Vacuum carpet , Soak the carpet wit a power washer , use soap of choice , scrub little with soft bristle brush , rinse again said power washer , let air dry in sun for about 2hrs Viola. My carpet doesn’t really ever stink or get that musty smell.

Ski Dave as far as the pontoon decking , my parents just got a brand new new 2020 this season. It has some sort of weave Looking decking on there that feels awesome on my feet. Haven’t a clue what it’s called . Toons these days are ridiculous. They’re like luxury sports cars , only in living room size . Crazy what some of these things look like inside and the power they have on the back.

LOL...come on!! This is a no-brainer...."Once you go SeaDek....you NEVER go back".....to carpet that is. I love my SeaDek....little bit of Dawn soap and a brush down twice a season....good as new...and it smells good too. When you buy a full suspension MT. bike....you'll NEVER go back to hardtail....When you go Platinum...you'll never go back to XLT....it's what the "Next Level" is all about. Don't cheat yourself. There is no longer a Brady Bunch carpet option for Nautique....LOL LOL

I put Decadence on my 230 as a replacement of carpet. At fist I just did not want to spend the money on Seadek but in pictures it looked really good. However, my Mastercraft dealer friend and all his heavy use people all independently said Decadence performs the best. They were right. While it may not look as fancy, it the best performing product I have experienced. It is incredibly durable, pull it out and hose any accumulated crud out of the boat. Any sand or debris does not sit on the surface while in use and it costs a fraction of Seadek. I may need a few SeaDek pieces for the to replace my Sano but the main traffic areas will remain Decadence.

I have to weigh in because as much as I like the feel, non slip, good wear, no mildew of seadeck - I just can't keep it looking clean or near new. I have the brownish color in my G23 and I am careful with food and drinks - very careful - yet my Seadeck looks stained in places. I have used Seadeck cleaner (the official one called Seadeck cleaner) and also dish soap and a soft and them medium bristle brush. It doesn't take the stained looks out. It makes me wish I had another flooring to test out. Not carpet though. No way.

I just cleaned mine yesterday I’m not getting any stains. Just a few small nicks. I think the brown hides the dirt pretty well. I just use soap and water and boat brush. I actually think just rinsing it several times is just a good as anything else.

edit if your getting permanent stains maybe you should figure where they are coming from
