    Sport Nautique Ballast

Hey guys.... I've got a new to me 95 Sport Nautique. I plan on utilizing the boat on a ski lake with depths between 4.5-8 feet. 80% of the time I'll be using it to ski the course. I understand that surfing a DD isn't optimal to begin with... never mind shallow water. I'm curious as to whether or not you think it's possible to run maybe 1000 lb of ballast, use a surf gate, and ride a Hyperlite Landlock (69") or the like. I'm thinking 500 lb on each side of the engine.

You might get away with the ballast but that depth IMO will be more of a problem than the boat or ballast. My last 2 boats have been marginal at best in anything under 10' depth. Our lake (unfortunately) only as a single long run that is deeper than 10'. As you exit the run into shallower water you can see the wake disappear almost linearly as the depth declines. At 6' I basically have nothing worth riding. Others may have different techniques to get around this but this has been my experience.

Hey - i've been looking at upgrading the ballast in my '98 Sport Nautique. I've surfed behind it with a couple of friends loaded to one side. There are a lot of articles on this site about how to load it out with bags or DIY wake modifications. Read through these pages and you'll see what I mean. https://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...n/diy-articleshttps://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...n/diy-articles

Hey - I have a '98 Sport Nautique. Not sure if the hull is the same as yours, but I have surfed behind it with a lot of friends in the boat. I'm getting ready to rip out the hard ballast tanks and put in some bags. Reading other posts, it seemed like everyone is putting weight in rear, in ski locker, up front, and next to engine. Lots of DIY surfgate /wedges as well. There are a number of posts in the DIY section: https://www.planetnautique.com/vb5/f...n/diy-articles

I agree with the first reply. Ballasting the boat isn't going to be your problem. It's that water depth. I really don't see anything good from trying to surf a boat (any boat) in 4.5 to 8 feet of water. The high end of this range is even too shallow. I think pursuing this is only going to result in disappointment.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'll just have to give it a go and see if there's enough push on a huge board.
