Stupid first time boat owner question

    Hey All!

have a really dumb question... I have a 18 230 and in the storage, there is carpet..... I quickly found... this carpet gets mildew all over it if I don't keep all the seats up. it's also impossible to keep it from getting wet... What are some of the procedures that yall have to keep the carpet from molding?

Has anyone ever taken the carpet out? I'm assuming it's raw fiberglass, correct?

    Thanks!
    -Derrick

Do you have 110V there? Small fan to circulate the air. I use one on mine.

An airy sunny day with all compartments open after spraying everything down with mold/mildew root remover. Won't stain or bleach the carpet and will kill anything. Sun is a great mold/mildew killer.

I open all seats and put fans in my boat after each outing, I also make sure the engine bay is dry to reduce corrosion issues down the road. A bit of a PITA sometimes keeping up with it, but I have no smell at all, at least I have boat garage at house so not too bad staying on top of it.

Damprid is good not only in storage compartents but also in engine bay to cut down on corrosion starting, especially during layup times. I dont think I would only do the Damprid and no fans during the season tho since I imagine it would not remove access water, just cuts down on moisture.

I seriously thot about removing all the carpet in my lockers and installing decking last year but decided its too much work and unless its super choppy or rains while out, the back lockers are the only place I have to worry about drying out after each outing since I rarely get any water under bow seats, observers compartment or under side seats. I still always remove all the seats after lake trip, but also built a shelf system in boat garage next to where boat parks so I just lift out seats and place them in their designated areas on the shelf. (FYI....pretty sure that on Nautique boats, its all finished gelcoat under the carpet, it is on my Centurion. You may be able to pull up a corner of carpet to check), I know there are other brands that its raw fiberglass but don't think that is the case on your boat due to how the mold is made for CC boats.

Since he wondered if it was a stupid question, and how to keep the boat dry is a very good question...A guy came on the Malibu crew a couple of weeks back and asked how he switched gas tanks. I was perplexed by the question until he pointed out that there are gas fills on both sides of the boat, and he needed to know how to switch from one tank to the other. I got a good chuckle out of that.
