Inappropriate Boat Stuff

I was reading one of the other threads, and it got me thinking about how we all probably have a lot of non-boat people out as guests. I have the standard pre-outing list that I go over with people we invite - no denim, no shorts with bling, we'll bring the towels/food/drinks/sunscreen, etc. It is just easier if we provide everything, otherwise you end up with spray sunscreen, unwashed colored towels, red Gatorade, bedazzled cutoffs, etc.

We have had a few what are they thinking moments, but nothing serious. I try to be good natured about it, teasing (but not really teasing) people that they are going to have to drink their grape juice on the swim platform if they bring it.

What stuff have you had people try to bring on your boat, or things they have tried to do, that makes you cringe? How did you handle it?

This may not be popular but a dog. A big male retreiver whose nails punctured my vinyl and left hair everywhere. Never again.

Markers for the kids to color with while having some “calm time”, red wine, popsicles on a 95 degree day. Popsicles we’re allowed on the swim step. Guests are pretty understanding with a “not a good idea on the boat, thanks for the thought though” with the markers, wine, etc.

Is the spray that much worse that lotion residue on hands and other body parts?

I've always been curious about the spray lotion and what is in it. I try not to be too anal because everyone I know already views me like that anyway . Had some friends over one weekend and didn't think about this but my buddy had a new soccer jersey on. I'm not sure if it was washed or not yet but the screen printing was coming off all over the white vinyl seat back he was against. He felt really bad about it and helped me hit it with some vinyl cleaner followed by 303 right away. Came most of the way out.

I gotta say on the food thing, having a bunch of little kids and friends kids on the boat, I try to let most things ride and go with the 'I'll clean it up later' approach. Mostly, it's the little chip and cracker crumbs that get down into everything, especially after they get a little wet and mushy.... ugh.

The spray stuff with propellent has something in it that stains vinyl orange. Like spraying a can of spray paint in your boat. Well, not quite, but up there with it.

Agreed, it think that regular sunscreen is bad but the spray goes everywhere. If I wipe the vinyl down afterward I am confident I'll get the main parts where people sit with regular sunscreen on. with the spray it could go anywhere.

I am certainly learning but with 3 kids there is only so much I can do to keep the boat clean.

I also now have invoked the “kids eat on the swim deck rule”.

I also have a no dogs rule, including my own.

My friends call me the boat nazi, but all of my boats have sold at a premium, partly due to having original interior in mint condition.

No footwear, even when getting on the boat.
No smoking.
No pets. (Even my own!)
No food or drinks with any color. We tend to stick with water, clear gatorade, propel, pirates booty, etc. Friends that want a cocktail usually have vodka or tequila with clear gatorade, or Coors Light beer.
Lunch is always eaten off the boat. If we are floating and eating off the swim step, we have a white towel that covers the step and I bring the trash can back. (Laugh now, pay later!)
No plastic bags. (The print can transfer when wet.)
All gear bags and coolers in compartments.
All sunscreen reinstalled on swim step if possible. Spray sunscreen only when wind blows away from our boat.
I also warn people about wearing colored clothing, and anything that has not yet been washed.

It really isn't much work at all to get people trained to do these things consistently.

Avobenzone is the component of sunscreen that causes stains. So anything without avobenzone will be fine. The spray is ineffective anyways.

My M-I-L has worn heels, brought red wine, and worn a light sun hat that would have instantly blown away above idle speeds. At this point the more I bring people out the less motivated I am to get a new boat. I’m the only one hat would really appreciate the bells and whistles and I would enjoy it less worrying about all of my guests ruining it. Makes me appreciate the boat I have now more honestly.

Thoughts on guests who get out of the water and don’t even pause to drip off on the swim step before walking into the boat?

Drives me nuts, I don’t mind when the young kids do it, but full grown adults could have a little more courtesy.
