Neighbor had a rough day at the lake - 210 capsizes

This is my neighbor. She was doing some surfing with full ballast and full passengers when a desert thunderstorm kicked up 4-5 foot swells. She took one swell over the side and then two more over the back. She got all the girls out of the boat and within minutes the boat capsized. She said all the girls were on shore before the boat rolled.

One more reason to stay in NorCal. I honestly don't understand how people can deal with summer storms like that. Yep, I'm sheltered. It also shows that you better have some quick thinking skills to survive in places like that. I guess my ridiculously high taxes in cali are actually worth something: It's called the price of admission. Lol

I don't know the specific abilities of these surf boats but every time I see one go by that is loaded down with ballast and people I wonder if they are operating very close to the margins of safety for a variety of potential adverse scenarios.

Glad everyone made it safely to shore! What happens if they were running perfect pass when it capsized? Would the electrical short out and stop the boat? Would it run until gas ran out?

Saw the epic YouTube videos of that storm. Can't believe folks didn't head for the far side of
The lake where wind and waves were less dangerous. Can't believe some even got their boats onto their trailers!

I would like to see the video of that as well.

This is my home lake. I have been out there when the same thing happened to me (except the capsizing part). I just took my boat to a protected area behind an island and watched the chaos at the ramp from a distance. Once most everyone was off the lake, I got my boat on the trailer. I waited there for about 90 minutes in that storm, idling in circles in the protected area. Fortunately, there were multiple good samaritans on the ramp helping, because I am not sure I would have made it on the trailer on my first try with a 50 MPH cross wind and several foot high swells. It happened on a day when I decided to experiment with extra ballast, so I was especially concerned since I was running a triangle sac in the bow.

You can see these storms coming, although on the bad ones, you only have 10 minutes notice. It often looks like one of those Mummy movies as the sand storm is coming at you. I cut my surfer's session short a few minutes after I saw the storm coming. By the time she was back in the boat and I was headed for the protected area, the waves were rapidly increasing. In retrospect, once I saw the sand whipping into the sky, I should not have delayed a second. I could always head back out if it turned out to be nothing.

In this case, I suspect the 11 girls were completely ineffective at helping the driver, with a good chance none of them had much experience handling a boat. Where the boat sunk was not far from an island that you can hide behind in a storm, which is what I did as I emptied the triangle sac. Sadly, nobody but me understood how to connect the pump, and I was very concerned about letting anyone else drive the boat while I did that.

I suspect it was the perfect storm of a delay, heavily loaded boat, ineffective help, and the fact the 210 doesn't have much freeboard.

Tallredrider I was wondering if that was you, glad it's not. Saw it posted on Facebook. It'd have to be a crazy storm for that little lake to whip up waves that big in so little time.

Does anyone have the YouTube link?

Wow, I just looked that lake up and it's just one open body of water with no fingers, coves or bays like most lakes I know of. I don't see any place to hide. Out there having fun and then you can get wiped out like that in minutes? That sucks!

There is an island not far from the boat ramp in the upper left. The wind almost always comes from the south. By hanging right behind the island, the waves are very small to non-existent. The wind was still bad, but the island does break up the waves. That is where I hid until the boat ramp chaos cleared itself.
If you are on the very south end of the lake, you would be better off probably just hugging the shoreline where the wind hasn't covered enough real estate to whip up the waves, and just waiting it out.
